For this Touhou Project Kaenbyou Rin cosplay photoshoot, the preparation phase primarily centered on balancing character authenticity with Gothic style aesthetics. Styling the long red wig with twin braids was fairly intricate, requiring a good amount of hairspray to sculpt the bangs. In terms of makeup, to stay true to the character, focus was placed on blended red eyeshadow and a pale foundation base, paired with red contact lenses to enhance the visual impact.
The costume is packed with fine details, featuring a black-and-green lace dress at its core. The dark emerald-green lining is thick and substantial, while the front black lace cutout design placed strict demands on fit, requiring careful adjustments across the bust. The red rose ornamentation at the waist and the ruby chain at the neckline were designed to echo the crimson hair. On the lower half, the Black stockings, leather garter straps, and chunky platform heels tested posing discipline during shooting, as finding the optimal angles to showcase leg lines without causing unflattering reflections on the Black stockings was essential. The wide brim of the large black hat also required constant awareness to avoid casting unwanted shadows across facial lighting.
The set was richly decorated with props: a vintage carved red velvet sofa, human skeleton models, scattered red roses, pearl necklaces, an antique phonograph, and candles. Photographer A-King put immense thought into the lighting setup, leveraging warm-and-cool contrast to heighten the mystique; the clash between crimson light sources and cyan-blue ambient fill brought out exquisite tactile depth.
During shooting, the main focus was interacting organically with props. The first photo primarily highlights upper-body details, guiding hand gestures to adjust the brim or touch the collar. The second is a full-body composition—sitting on the sofa with legs outstretched and crossed—which best accentuates body proportions, where the red soles of the shoes complement the Black stockings wonderfully. Subsequent sets featured kneeling or reclining poses, where knee and elbow contact points were fine-tuned repeatedly to ensure natural posture. When cradling skulls or interacting with full skeletons, expression control was vital to maintain that haughty, subtly dangerous aura without looking awkward.
This photo series aimed to express a dark romance blending opulence, decadence, and danger. The session was time-intensive—the abundance of props, set adjustments, and managing safe distances all required careful handling. Movements had to remain fluid and natural before the lens to avoid accidental wardrobe slips. Because the makeup tended to wash out under flashlights, frequent touch-ups were done between takes. As an ambitious, cinematic-grade creative attempt, the final outcome delivered deeply satisfying colors and textures. Focusing on making the character stand out amidst a complex background was a truly rewarding creative experience.
