On this special occasion of Sanae Day, I spent a full day shooting Kochiya Sanae Cosplay from Touhou Project. This series themed "Wind and Miracles" was shot by photographer kuno at a local convention center. Although the indoor setup at the venue was somewhat cluttered, it didn't disrupt the pace of the shoot; instead, by utilizing a combination of hard light and overhead light on site, we captured a wonderful, cool aesthetic atmosphere.
Regarding the outfit, the white jacquard top chosen this time has great texture, with subtle reflections of woven patterns under the light, giving it a much richer sense of layering than plain white. The off-the-shoulder design beautifully showcases the neck and shoulder lines, while the dark blue bowtie and embroidery at the neckline add a touch of modern feel to the elegant demeanor. The lower portion features a wave-pattern printed skirt intertwining dark blue and teal, echoing the theme. The skirt hem is richly layered, and combined with extensive tassels along the edges, it creates a wonderful dynamic motion when moving.
Prop coordination was crucial for this shoot. The gohei prop in hand, along with hanging rectangular ornaments, feature intricate beadwork and long cyan-white tassels. To firmly hold this long rod prop while maintaining the graceful drape of the tassels, I adjusted my hand postures multiple times before shooting. The wrists needed to maintain stability so the prop and body formed a harmonious visual extension. The carp hair accessory on top added a playful touch to the overall look. Paired with a refreshing mint green long straight wig, the entire look presented a feel that was both ethereal and crisp.
Shooting on location at a comic convention is quite a physical task. Moving through crowds in this substantial outfit required not only maintaining my condition at all times, but also quickly entering the character's emotion under the photographer's guidance. Softboxes and silver reflectors were used on site to illuminate the face, making the skin texture look translucent, while the blue contact lenses in my eyes shone brightly under the light reflection. Being able to restore a 2D image in reality and capture these moments in front of the lens is a joyful experience in itself as part of Casual cosplay.
Although exhausting, the day's shoot was very fulfilling. From makeup, dressing, and action guidance to capturing the final frame under the lights, everything turned out quite complete, from clothing textures to overall atmospheric expression. Without flashy tricks, it relied heavily on understanding the character and the visual tension presented by the outfit. The compositions across this photo set—whether standing as in the second picture or other poses—captured the character's true spirit wonderfully.
Cosplaying a character that relies heavily on costume details and lighting in a busy convention environment presents a big challenge, but the final outcome in this Convention photography project is very satisfying. It was a delightful shooting experience and a satisfying commemoration of this special day.
