[Rei Ayanami cosplay] The Seaside Instrumentality Project

This collaboration set of Rei Ayanami is finally retouched, shot on the low-tide beach of the coastal park. To fit the setting, I prepared the blue-gray short hair and this sailor suit in advance. Because the wind was very strong that day and the wig could easily get messed up, I spent a long time fixing it with hairspray beforehand. The setting was a mudflat with muddy water and shallow puddles; walking required immense care, but this also brought a raw, natural graininess to the image, accentuating the sense of detachment far better than a clean, fine beach could.

After extensive communication with photographer NightDiva, we decided on a composition with large negative space—scaling down the subject so the sky occupies most of the frame—to approach that lonely atmosphere. This time, low-saturation, cool-toned post-processing filters were applied to subdue saturation, keeping the overall tone in a grayish-blue palette. In particular, the red bow tie served as the only bright color in the entire image, contrasting with the cool-toned background.

Throughout the shoot, we were constantly battling strong winds; for example, the sideways pose in photo three was actually captured by the photographer as the skirt fluttered naturally with the wind direction. The photo of sitting on the stone wall in photo five was actually very tricky to pull off: the torso had to remain completely upright, hands propping against the edge to maintain balance, shoulders relaxed and level, while the eyes had to be intentionally vacant, without too much emotion. Controlling the leg lines and making the black stockings appear more slender in the frame, combined with the stretching effect of the wide-angle lens, finally achieved that desolate visual effect.

Standing and adjusting angles repeatedly on the mudflat in this outfit left my shoes almost entirely covered in mud. Although the process was quite an ordeal, this attempt gave me a fresh understanding of how to accentuate a character's personality through a vast environment. Such as capturing the breeze sweeping through the hair, lowering the head while turning sideways, and the contemplative expression by the stone wall—how to express that distinctive helplessness and aloofness. The photographer's lighting setup and compositional guidance also provided professional insights, allowing me to get into character much better. This was a relatively special experience in my shooting journey; the sitting pose in photo five expresses emotion vividly, and I hope everyone can feel the tranquil aura conveyed by this photo.
