For this Cheshire Cosplay look from Azur Lane, the most eye-catching feature at first glance is undoubtedly the two massive golden bells on top of the head along with that iconic blue-and-white gradient headpiece. When preparing this costume, just securing and calibrating those accessories took considerable effort. The headpiece base required high-strength hairspray and internal shaping wire to ensure the exaggerated blue bows and golden bells remained upright on my head without tilting when looking down or leaping. The skirt was even more of a headache; to achieve that tiered cake-like volume, the petticoat used specialized stiff crinoline netting. When shooting these floating suspended actions, a massive rigid hoop skirt was necessary to maintain the wide flare of the skirt hem, and to prevent the outline of the hoop from showing through, heavy layers of white lace ruffles had to be stacked outside, ultimately making the entire gown remarkably heavy.
In terms of makeup and the wig, precise styling techniques were employed to match the character's silver-gray base and that distinct touch of cyan streaks. The wig's bangs had to be trimmed to frame the eye makeup contours neatly; putting on these light blue contact lenses instantly gave the eyes that energetic, clever sparkle. For makeup, the focus was a luminous base that fit anime aesthetics cleanly. To harmonize with the crown's hair color, I deliberately added a soft blue-gray gradient along the outer edges of the eyeshadow. The silver-gray wig carries a muted saturation that is notoriously lighting-sensitive—without proper lighting, it can easily make the complexion look dull. Fortunately, the convention hall we chose that day provided ample overhead lighting, perfectly accentuating the radiant luster of both hair and skin.
Turning to this elaborate black-and-white maid dress: while the flared skirt looks magnificent when spread out in photos, structural support underneath becomes paramount during actual shooting, especially when lifting one leg in mid-air to create striking visual impact. To maintain the skirt's voluminous flare mid-flight, I had to find a center of balance amidst dynamic movement. The intricate ruffles at the cuffs and the cinched waist design contoured body lines while enriching overall depth. Pairing the White thigh-highs outfit with bare feet also highlighted the relaxed, playful nature inherent to the character.
The overhead lighting in the hall was very bright on the shoot day, with staggered spotlights creating beautiful circular bokeh spots in the background, preserving a luminous atmosphere for post-processing. A low-angle perspective elongates body proportions, but to keep the composition's balance steady, core muscles had to remain tightly engaged—which is far more demanding than ordinary standing poses. Naturally, shooting these leaping, floating frames tested the photographer's snapshot timing to the utmost. The photographer and I went through numerous takes before capturing that exact split-second where the skirt flared at its fullest in mid-air before falling. The reflective flooring also added gorgeous reflection texture to these Convention photos, though we had to stay vigilant to avoid stray passersby or cluttered objects. Being able to capture such clean frames in the bustling chaos of a convention was deeply satisfying.
Although this photo set appears effortlessly light, the preparation behind it was anything but easy. From wig styling and makeup precision to scouting a clean backdrop within the exhibition hall, every step required total dedication. When portraying this character, the most crucial aspect was capturing her uninhibited, energetic feline personality. Poses couldn't be overly prim and proper; they needed a breezy, spontaneous bounce. Despite being weighed down by layers of costume structure, facial expression management required keeping a subtle upturn at the corners of the lips—a confident, playful smirk. The soft indentations at the tops of the White thigh-highs outfit, combined with posing barefoot, accentuated dynamic motion tension and character approachability better than footwear ever could. Many might wonder how to exert force through the instep while suspended; in reality, pushing off firmly with toes against the floor is what creates that naturally extended line in mid-air. What seems like an effortless snapshot is truly a showcase of core body control.
