[Asuka Cosplay] Neon Genesis Evangelion: Capturing the Spirit of Unit-02's Pilot at CD30 Expo

On the second day of the CD30 Expo, I finally got to head out wearing this Asuka cosplay outfit before the event wrapped up. From trimming and styling the wig to tweaking the outfit's details, I spent quite a while preparing in advance for this day. The lighting at the venue was a bit messy, but the round overhead lights turned out to be a nice accent, allowing this black-and-white plugsuit to show off a much better texture under backlighting or side lighting.

A huge reason I decided to cosplay Asuka is that her outfit design is so iconic. The high ponytail and bow hair accessories are essential soul pieces, and the bangs needed to be layered slightly to capture that crisp, sharp look. For the makeup, I deliberately emphasized the angle of my eyes; after putting on light-colored contacts, my overall presence felt a bit cooler and sharper. In the first photo, when I stood with my hands crossed, I was actually trying hard to control my expression. The stiff sleeves and collar structure widened my shoulders a bit, but that unexpectedly highlighted her stubborn temperament really well.

The second photo is a personal favorite snapshot of mine. When pointing my finger straight at the camera, I had to focus intensely, and luckily my gaze didn't wander the moment the shutter pressed. This outfit has many details worth mentioning, like the round red button on the collar, which pops visually against the pure white collar and serves as a major focal point. The black-and-white vertical stripe paneling on the chest connects with the red crisscross waist ties into a corset structure. Although it felt a bit tight to wear, it shaped the body figure amazingly, and once paired with Black and white striped socks, the overall Anime-style fashion combat suit vibe was instantly maxed out.

At CD30, many fellow fans passing by recognized the character at first glance, and being recognized in that moment made me so happy. However, because the venue was crowded and I get hot easily, I spent most of the breaks looking for breezy spots or shade. The sleeves of today's outfit feature a puff-sleeve design decorated with black diamond patterns, along with black ribbons tied at the cuffs. These tiny details required slight posture adjustments during shooting to display fully; otherwise, they could droop or fold into a clump. To maintain the shape of the outfit, I wore a stiff petticoat underneath, allowing the layered white ruffles of the skirt to hold a nice curve while letting the black lace trim underneath peek through subtly.

To be honest, the scariest thing when cosplaying is having outfit details go wrong or hair refusing to stay neat. But everything went smoothly today, and aside from feeling a bit tired, the outfit, makeup, and hair remained quite stable. I really like the posture in Figure 1 where I turned slightly sideways with hands clasped, paired with a slightly distant gaze, conveying a cool yet cautious personality trait. Figure 2's direct face-forward shot is more dynamic, with an aggressive pointing finger perfectly fitting her everyday tsundere charm and decisive combat nature.

At a large offline event like CD30, meeting so many people cosplaying classic characters, taking Convention photos for each other, and sharing tips on styling wigs and outfits is truly the greatest joy of attending conventions. The Black and white striped socks and the red-black-white color-blocked corset in this outfit might look a bit exaggerated in daily wear, but they fit right in within the unique environment of an anime convention. I hope the dedication put into today's look comes through these frozen moments, allowing everyone viewing the photos to feel my passion for bringing this character to life, as well as the unique charm of cosplay itself.
