Taking advantage of the weekend, I booked a photographer to go to a local Volleyball gym to shoot this athletic headcanon set I've been planning for a long time.
Regarding this look: since Sora-chan's official outfits lean toward casual wear and dresses, I wanted to attempt a more youthful, athletic vibe this time. So I specially chose this white-with-blue-trim Gymnastics uniform paired with dark shorts and white over-the-knee socks. In the post I noted "apologies for fan headcanon/design," as it is indeed a style extension based on the character's aura; I hope while enjoying this fresh feeling, everyone can still keep the character's original essence in mind. Under the cool-toned lighting of the gym, the white over-the-knee socks actually made my skin tone look exceptionally clean, which is one of my favorite details of this styling.
During shooting, we utilized the venue's ball racks and scoreboards as foregrounds or backgrounds to add depth. The first photo is a profile shot holding a water bottle—the bottle was actually my own drinking prop, as I wanted that realistic feel of taking a break mid-game, turning around to ask "Want some water?" The second is a full-body standing shot hugging a blue-and-yellow volleyball, which echoes the rows of ball racks in the background, unifying the entire set's vibe around the Volleyball gym theme.
In actual shooting, the gym's white background and overhead lighting were quite challenging for the camera and lighting setup. Direct hard light easily casts harsh shadows on the face, so we specifically found a translucent overhead light scattering angle, complemented by reflector fill lights, to keep skin texture as soft as possible. Pose-wise, the photographer suggested I avoid standing rigid, tilting my body slightly or angling my head to appear more lively rather than stiff. The props and water bottle served as natural action guides—holding the bottle and volleyball naturally relaxed hand postures, preventing stiffness.
Shooting in this kind of outfit also posed challenges: because of the white-base fabric, slight carelessness easily causes overexposure and detail loss. Combined with complex indoor lighting, post-processing required dedicated adjustments for white balance and skin tone consistency. Trying to capture a natural, casual feel in athletic cosplay actually tests snapshot skills more than shooting ornate, complex idol costumes or battle gear. After all, a Gymnastics uniform itself is very everyday; without enough atmosphere and poses to support it, it easily ends up looking like an ordinary PE class photo.
The character's inherent cool fragility combined with the vitality of this athletic wear produced a wonderful chemical reaction, which is exactly the gap/contrast I wanted to express. This look doesn't feel overly heavy—it sits closer to a realistic state of putting on sportswear to hang out at a playground or gym, which is one reason I love this theme. As a bold style experiment, sorting through these photos made me feel truly happy: the entire frame is clean and the color tone is refreshingly crisp. I hope the handling of character aura and recreation of athletic mood in this Kasugano Sora cosplay set achieves the desired effect for fans of Yosuga no Sora.
