[Hatsune Miku cosplay] Butterfly Headphones and Black Skirt Convention Photos

Completing this photoshoot wearing a black ruffled miniskirt and butterfly headphones, the overall styling aimed to construct a 2D visual contrast with a touch of Gothic style. A very full teal-blue long curly wig was chosen, displaying ideal hair glossiness and fluffiness under the studio lighting at the exhibition venue. The microphone, headphones, and giant magenta textured bow on the head were the top priorities of this outfit, maxing out the recognition of the original VOCALOID character's accessories. To stabilize these headpieces, hidden clips were processed inside the wig, so there was no need to worry about deformation or falling off even after walking around the convention hall all day.

The key feature of the costume lies in the layering of the skirt. The skirt hem uses a black glossy material overlaid with many layers of wavy ruffled cuts; this design looks great when lifting the skirt in a standing pose, holding up a fantastic spatial contour so the lower body doesn't look thin. A white hollowed-pattern corset at the waist acts as a visual transition against the black base, elevating the waistline while giving the entire dress more detail. The black lace fingerless gloves on the arms are also a clever accent, revealing fabric texture under macro lenses.

For the lower body, glossy patent leather Mary Jane high heels were chosen, combining a high platform with high heels, paired with semi-sheer black pantyhose as part of this Black tights outfit. Patent leather reflections performed exceptionally well under convention photo booths, and alongside the skin-tone transition of tights, visually elongated leg lines effectively. During shooting, moving from the skirt-lifting expansion pose in Photo 2 to the single-leg kick-back in Photo 1, and then to the seated pose in Photo 3, aimed to showcase distinct rhythmic motions in combining the black dress with black tights. In Photo 3's seated posture, the flowing movement of the wig was captured as a snapshot, creating a temporary stay atmosphere alongside the metal bar stool.

The venue for this shoot was a large indoor exhibition hall, where the environment was actually quite cluttered with other attendees and various photography gear, like visible softboxes and reflective umbrellas. To highlight the subject in this Cosplay photography project, post-processing desaturated the background into low-saturation monochrome gray tones, concentrating the visual focus on the large teal-blue wig and black outfit at the center of the frame. This desaturation technique can easily sacrifice some background realism, but in an inherently complex convention setting, it serves as a shortcut to make photos more impactful in these Convention photos.

Since the entire outfit is made of fabric with a subtle sheen, it has high lighting requirements. Under a key light positioned slightly above from the front, the waves of the skirt hem and the toes of the high heels formed lovely reflective highlights, while making the texture of the tights feel closer to natural skin texture. Details of the waist hollow pattern were not overexposed under strong light, preserving proper textures. During shooting, a relatively open photography area was deliberately sought out to ensure sufficient background bokeh while avoiding noisy crowds.

I feel Photo 2 is most suitable as the main cover—the posture is upright yet playful, with two hands lifting the skirt to display the skirt design to the maximum, and centered character composition without edge cropping. These three photos basically reflect different states of this styling across static and dynamic moments, without forced exaggerated poses, but serving as extensions grounded in the character's original personality. Since the temperature wasn't low on shooting day and indoor air conditioning was decent, wearing this outfit didn't feel too muggy, though the wig was indeed heavy, testing my neck throughout the day.

Previewing photos on-site after shooting, I was already quite satisfied with the raw color impact. Early-stage makeup, styling, and lighting synergy were spot on, requiring only minor color refinement in post-processing to achieve ideal results. Occasionally attempting styling that clashes dark aesthetics with high-saturation accessories brings a fresh photo experience. Because the butterfly headphones of this look were so prominent, quite a few fellow fans recognized me while walking through the hall, making for a fantastic interaction atmosphere—which is one of the great joys of producing convention photos.
