The ChinaJoy venue was as staggeringly vast as ever, with outdoor heat and ground glare pushing the perceived temperature near 40°C. Wearing a full Lolita ensemble in such conditions was a dual test of physical stamina and mindset. To beat the crowds, I arrived outside the halls early in the morning, yet this multi-tiered pink ruffled dress absorbed heat so intensely that sweat broke across my forehead within minutes. Still, when choosing the path of Anime cosplay, a little heat is nothing.
Traveling light for this convention, I decisively abandoned heavy telephoto bazookas and relied solely on the Sony A7M5 and 24-70 GM combination. As it turned out, this setup was exceptionally practical for Sony photography in such a crowded venue with fickle lighting. The 24-70mm focal range is versatile—capable of both environmental full-body portraits framed by architecture and tight half-body close-ups. The A7M5's autofocus and out-of-camera color science performed reliably, drastically cutting down shooting and post-processing times, enabling quick-fire captures in the sweltering heat.
The details of this Lolita design are quite intricate, layering multi-tiered white lace and ruffles over pink fabric, with heart-shaped appliques accenting the skirt, an oversized pink plush hair accessory on my head, and a fluffy magic wand prop in hand. To harmonize with the overall palette, I wore light purplish-blue Lace over-the-knee socks paired with white chunky-heeled Mary Janes for this Lolita outfit coordination. Although the over-the-knee socks visually elongated my leg lines and looked stunning as the skirt flared into an arch, walking outdoors all day made the socks genuinely stuffy and the shoes chafed slightly. Yet the instant a breeze lifted the skirt and sunlight pierced through the clouds, all exhaustion was instantly redeemed.
Catching that fleeting second of clear sky was no small feat; skies that had been overcast just seconds earlier suddenly brightened right by Gate E4. I swiftly repositioned, using the glass curtain wall behind me and the geometric architecture of the hall as my backdrop to press the shutter, freezing the moment the skirt billowed into the air. Capturing clean Convention photos at an anime expo demands precise angles and chasing the light. I usually steer clear of main stages and congested walkways, heading toward quieter entrances or building edges to exploit natural lighting and specular reflections for richer compositional depth.
In truth, I wasn't portraying a specific character this time—I simply adore the colorway and tailoring of this Lolita look, aiming to document this delicate, sweet aesthetic of ACG culture through the lens. Seeing so many fellow enthusiasts at the convention meticulously styling their wigs and makeup, snapping photos, and connecting with one another was a rare, treasured vibe. By the end of the day, the soles of my feet were aching and I had retouched my base makeup multiple times, yet glancing at the crisp images in the camera filled me with fulfillment and satisfaction. Packing up my props and gear, I'm heading to grab a cold drink to cool off and see if any other booths have fun merch to explore.
