This time at Taiyuan Comic Con, I brought the Wandering Dragon Violet Splendor styling of Xishi from Honor of Kings. Ample preparations were made from the headwear to the costume details. The wig chose purple long curly hair with a gradient texture, topped with golden dragon horn hair accessories, and adorned with pearls and tassels on the sides, closely fitting the original artwork setting. In terms of clothing, this outfit has extremely rich layers: the inner layer is a cyan-white base, covered by a blue-purple gradient gauze skirt, with fish-scale-like dark patterns and golden piped edges on the hem. To accurately recreate the styling, I also specially matched it with translucent arm gauze and metal pendants on the chest. Regarding props, the pink lotus held in hand is made of translucent material with built-in light strips, creating a faintly glowing effect under the venue lights of the anime convention.
Roaming the venue at this Taiyuan Comic Con, the alternation of natural light and overhead lighting inside the venue brought quite a few challenges to photography. To capture the translucent feel of the costume's gauze material, we took quite a few photos in areas with strong side lighting. The skirt hem of this outfit is relatively short; matched with gauze-style under-shorts, extra care was needed when moving and posing to pull and adjust it, preventing any exposure. During the posed shoots, I tried to recreate the classic action of the character holding the lotus and reaching forward. While roaming the venue, many fellow fans recognized this styling and came over to take photos and chat, discussing the materials of the costume and the processing methods of the makeup, making the atmosphere very harmonious.
Cosplaying Xishi from Honor of Kings is not only a tribute to my favorite hero, but also an in-depth experience of traditional Chinese style costume design. This outfit features quite a few metal pieces, which required careful position adjustments during wear to ensure symmetry on both sides. For the makeup part, reddish-pink eyeshadow was used for blending, paired with light-colored contact lenses to highlight the character's lively sense. Since the anime convention site was rather stuffy and warm, a base makeup product with high longevity was chosen, and touch-up tools were carried along. From preparing props to shooting on site, although the entire process consumed physical stamina, seeing the complete character effect presented in the lens made me feel that all the preparations were completely worthwhile. In the future, I will continue to try more traditional Chinese style looks, refining my makeup, styling, and camera expression.
