This set of Wuhan Marcille cosplay shot in May hasn't had time to be posted until now. At that time, my mind was full of taking wide landscape shots, so when choosing the location, I specially found a wild field full of purple verbena. After the actual photos came out, I found that there were indeed not many close-ups, all wide landscape shots with small figures, but it can also be considered a style.
Let's talk about the preparation for this styling. Marcille's clothes look simple, but they actually have quite a few layers. A dark blue long dress with a red bow tied at the neckline. The edge of that light blue shawl has beige splicing, which has a very good texture under natural light. The wig is light golden, braided into two thick braids, and it took quite a few hairpins to secure it to the head. The most crucial part is the props: the staff is made of lightweight wood, with vines wrapped around the ring at the top, making it quite heavy in hand. There are also elf ears, which require skin wax to blend the edges when wearing, plus a layer of thin foundation, so they won't look too abrupt up close. The eye makeup used green contact lenses, matched with earth-toned eyeshadow, trying to fit the character's natural feel as much as possible.
The shooting day was cloudy, with soft light, so I didn't have to face the scorching sun and struggle to open my eyes. But for wearing robes and a shawl, the temperature in May was a bit warm. With the shawl draped over my shoulders, running around even a little made it easy to sweat. However, this flower sea was truly worth it. The grass grew tall, and stepping into it could submerge your calves. During the shoot, I walked in the grass with the staff, or sat on fallen wood. Because of shooting wide landscapes, the range of motion tended to be quite large, and the photographer asked me to raise my hand to look into the distance or lower my head to pick a flower. The wide landscape composition framed the characters and the entire sea of purple flowers and yellow and white wildflowers. Although close-ups were scarce, this kind of environmental portrait heavily relies on the character's integration into nature.
To review, wide-angle landscape composition is very hard to control; if poorly composed, it easily turns into just a landscape photo. We found some tree trunks and benches as foreground or background, utilizing the depth of the tree trunks, plus the blurring of the foreground flowers, and the layering of the picture came out. There is a side profile photo of sitting on a tree stump, with light hitting from the side, which can clearly illuminate the outline of the clothes and the gloss of the wig.
Shooting this set of photos consumes a lot of physical energy, walking around in the grass wearing thick clothes in the hot weather while maintaining the character's expression. I am satisfied with the final photos myself; the color of the flower sea matches the blue clothes very well. Didn't shoot many close-ups this time, I'll make up for it next time if there's a chance.
