The lighting at the ANE convention hitting the reflective floor creates a texture where cold and warm tones interweave. Combined with the overhead lights of the convention center, a subtle aura is refracted onto the semi-transparent fabric of the wings, making this Gothic style outfit of the little devil look more three-dimensional under the venue's lighting. The core design of this costume lies in the contrasting interplay of black, white, and red. The white lantern-sleeved inner shirt injects a necessary brightness into the overall dark corset and skirt hemline, while also matching the quiet, scholarly temperament of the library. Styling the red wig takes some time, but paired with the pointed elf ears and a pair of signature black horns, the character recognition is very high at the convention venue.
During the shoot, the photographer was excellent at capturing expressions from different perspectives. Especially with the high stool I sat on, we could utilize it to showcase the continuity of different poses. The black chunky-soled boots I chose were highly practical for this exhibition environment; they added a sense of stability to the lower body, and when paired with a leg-crossing sitting posture, they remained visually playful. To recreate the setting of this character residing in the library, I prepared these thick prop books as the magic book in the library. The covers of the books feature dark red paired with golden circular patterns, exuding a strong magical aura. Carrying these heavy books around the exhibition hall definitely put a fair amount of weight on my arms, but the authentic weight it brought to the frame is something that post-processing special effects can hardly replace.
In front of the lens, I tried to interpret the sense of contradiction in this character—possessing both the playfulness belonging to a little devil and the focus of traversing through a sea of books. When turning the pages and looking into the distance, I would relax my facial expression; when my gaze focused on the camera, my eyes would reveal a touch of cunning light. The photographer used a large aperture to completely blur the other figures in the background, leaving only clean, mottled lights, firmly anchoring the visual focus on the lace details of the costume and the texture of the red hair. Through several different sets of movements, from standing to sitting, and from holding the book with one hand to handing it out with both hands, everything adapted beautifully to the convention's shooting environment.
Personally, I feel the greatest charm of convention photos is that they have a real background. The lighting, environmental light spots, and the airflow on site all realistically act upon the costume's skirt hemline and wings. To adapt to these real-world physical feedbacks, when striking a pose, one needs to consider the drape of the clothes, ensuring the wings aren't too rigid and the book isn't held too stiffly. The makeup design this time also leaned toward being clean and refreshing; through the layering of red eyeshadow and lip gloss, the skin tone still appeared translucent and natural under the intense light. Although attending the convention was exhausting, being able to cooperate so smoothly with my partner and finding that character-specific quietness and agility in the final shots is the truest summary of my experience with these ANE convention photos.
