Cosplaying Dongfang Yuechu this time, the biggest challenge was actually the presentation of the wig styling and costume details. To create that youthful yet slightly frizzy black hair, I didn't use the conventional smooth method, but intentionally made it fluffy and styled. The two ring-shaped stylings on top of the head required adjusting through several angles before finally being fixed. The red knots on the clothes, the shoulder armor, and the gold buckles at the waist also required time to wear; only by pulling the belt tight could the silhouette of the entire outfit be supported.
The lighting in the venue on the day of the shoot was complex and people were coming and going, so we found a relatively open area. The action in picture three of kneeling on one knee and reaching out was actually a flash of inspiration during the shoot; my partner looked down from a stool while I looked up and reached out. This staggered high-and-low positioning instantly filled the frame with tension. To steady this posture, I not only had to keep my back straight, but also control the angle of my extended arm, and my knees pressing directly against the smooth floor actually hurt quite a bit. The casual half-lying posture in picture one looked effortless, but it was very easy to slip on the floor, requiring core strength to be tightened to maintain a relaxed state.
The coordination with my partner was very smooth. Although the theme was Reincarnation Pledge, we hoped to add some natural sense of daily interaction into the actions. In the close-up of picture two, when my partner pointed at me, the two of us were actually trying hard to hold back our laughter because the edge of the wig was a bit prickly against the face, and we still had to try our best to maintain our state in front of the lens. The side-by-side standing posture in picture four was meant to showcase the drape of the costume and the layers of the sleeve hems, requiring deliberate angle control of the arm lines to avoid looking stiff.
Cosplaying the character Dongfang Yuechu is not just about putting on the clothes and wearing the wig; more importantly, it is about finding that firm yet affectionate internal emotion in front of the lens, conveying it outward through gaze and body language. There was a lot of clutter at the convention site, but the photographer used a wide aperture for blurring, locking the visual focus firmly on the character itself. From ironing and organizing the costume to scrutinizing each action one by one, I hoped every detail could be as close as possible to that image in my heart. Although the entire shooting process was tiring and the wig was stuffy, being able to interpret a beloved character in my own way and communicate with fellow enthusiasts is the purest joy that cosplay brings me.
