[Anchorage cosplay] Azur Lane Eagle Union Heavy Cruiser: Convention Photos Experience

For this convention, I brought this Anchorage cosplay costume from Azur Lane. The overall design features a modified qipao-style dress with black fabric, red floral patterns, and gold-trimmed jacquard, accented with black leather belts and metal buckles. The lower half consists of black shorts and black lace garter Stockings, paired with white high heels. For makeup and styling, red contact lenses were paired with light pink lip makeup and a soft blush glow on the cheeks, along with golden-yellow twintails and dark-patterned bun covers tied with white ribbons on both sides, all aimed at staying as close to the character design as possible. During the shoot, it was the peak crowd time at the anime convention and the venue was quite noisy. I'm very grateful to photographer @Pulao411 for patiently sorting out the framing and skillfully using a wide aperture to blur out the cluttered background crowd. The lighting was controlled very softly, capturing the skin with a luminous, fair glow. Throughout the shoot, we tried many different poses: holding hands clasped in front of the chest, holding a round fan in one hand, and interacting with a yellow plushie. The one I'm most satisfied with is the candid snapshot of the seated cross-legged pose. The black lace garter Stockings paired with white high heels greatly elongated leg lines in front of the lens, while working with ample negative space in the background to ensure the visual focus rested firmly on the subject. Because the outfit features many leather straps and metal buckles, putting it on, taking it off, and adjusting it took quite a bit of time. Moreover, with the large crowd on-site, the wig and accessories needed frequent tidying, which luckily went smoothly thanks to my companion's help. As a cosplayer passionate about anime-style photography, I actually really enjoy the thrill of spontaneity in fast on-site snapshots. While studio shoots allow for slow lighting and expression adjustments, Convention photo shoots rely much more on improvisation and muscle memory in front of the camera. At the venue, I also learned many small tricks about controlling body language—such as how to keep limbs relaxed yet natural, and how to maintain sharp eye focus when facing the camera. For a character like Anchorage who carries a gentle demeanor, managing subtle facial micro-expressions is especially crucial. The round fan and yellow plushie in hand were wonderful supporting props that helped me get into character, matching the overall costume vibe to faithfully recreate that gentle, dynamic presence. Although shooting all day drained a lot of stamina, seeing the exported Convention photos from the photographer made all the previous efforts—using safety pins to adjust garment edges and constantly hunting for reflector positions—completely worth it. This Azur Lane Anchorage Convention photo experience made me realize once again what a blessing it is to meet like-minded photographers and support friends in this community. Capturing these moments that only exist in character lore through the camera lens is precisely the most enchanting part of anime photography.
