Crafting this white dress ensemble for Unicorn took over half a month from initial pattern drafting to final detail adjustments. The delicate lace trims on the skirt and the hollowed-out lacing across the chest required immense patience to execute; to honor the character design faithfully, the semi-translucent little back wings prop was specially reinforced. Regarding the wig, since the character features long purple hair with soft blue gradient tips, I pre-combed and trimmed the bangs, finishing the crown with her signature silver antenna prop and a white floral hairpin.
For this shoot, we utilized an indoor vintage sofa set, where the surrounding wooden furniture and ship models enhanced the naval atmosphere seamlessly. The overall lighting was kept soft, focusing primarily on capturing the fabric's rich texture and overall temperament. This dress for the Girl in a white dress possesses generous ruffled volume, with tiered sleeve layers standing out crisply before the camera. To convey her well-behaved yet gently dependent disposition, I deliberately choreographed subtle poses like lightly touching my cheek and chin, which paired harmoniously with the little plush doll sporting a purple horn.
Speaking of Unicorn, she is canonically deeply reliant on her Commander, necessitating facial expressions that channel gentleness and pure innocence. For eye makeup, I diffused soft pink blush across wide areas and wore deep-toned contact lenses to capture that anime spirit. The most challenging aspect was keeping the garment smooth: because much of it consists of delicate tulle and chiffon, sitting down easily creates unnatural wrinkles, requiring skirt hems and sleeve tiers to be reset after every take.
Convention venues are typically noisy and chaotic, making it difficult to craft a tranquil ambiance. Fortunately, we found a relatively open nook, letting the solid texture of the vintage sofa ground the visual center of gravity. Many friends asked how the antenna prop stayed secured: it actually anchors through a wig cap reinforced with hidden bobby pins. While lightweight, balancing it while walking requires caution to prevent it from tilting.
The authenticity of this cosplay hinges on color balance—the precise ratio of purple to white, accented by blue ribbons. Including the plush doll not only enriched visual storytelling, but also lent a lively rhythm to the palette. Poses were kept naturally relaxed; because the garment's architecture is intricate, overly rigid postures undermine its flowing silhouette.
Photographer friends encountered at the convention offered wonderful framing tips, like using the sofa backrest as foreground framing or shooting from side angles to showcase tiered skirt folds. Post-processing was kept minimal, adjusting only basic brightness and contrast to preserve genuine fabric textures. While cosplaying involves meticulous labor, every phase—from fabric sourcing and prototyping to final delivery—delivers the pure joy of bringing a 2D character into reality, building her identity piece by piece through wardrobe and props.
