Before putting on this black-and-gold modified Japanese costume, I specifically tested its reflective texture under various lighting conditions. The subtle sheen of the fabric, paired with warm ambient lighting, fully brings out the layered depth of the outfit. The ring of white fur trim around the collar and cuffs was a major focal point; before shooting, I meticulously combed through it to ensure consistent hair direction so it would register as crisp and fluffy on camera rather than a matted mess. The pink bunny-ear headband and black-and-gold emblem on my head were also reinforced to ensure they wouldn't slip during downcast or tilted poses.
To capture Laffey's sleepy, tipsy personality, I tweaked the makeup style accordingly. I deepened the crimson gradient around the outer eyes and lower lids, pairing it with magenta-purple contacts to lend a slightly dreamy, hazy quality to the gaze. The twintail wig was deliberately styled with a touch of tousled dishevelment rather than being combed sleek, giving off a relaxed, at-home mood. The choker and the tiny white bunny pendant on the waist were also carefully curated to inject a burst of cuteness into the heavier black-and-gold palette.
Using props throughout the shoot turned out to be quite physically demanding. The long katana, wrapped with red-and-gold braiding, had considerable heft; holding a crisp, poised pose required keeping the wrist firmly engaged while keeping my core and spine straight. The folding fans in the shots were also very distinctive—black ribbing paired with deep scarlet leaves and trailing red tassels. We spent a lot of time adjusting the opening angle of the fan in the mirror to find the exact placement that veiled the lower half of my face. The hand holding the fan needed to avoid looking stiff, resting the fingers naturally along the ribs for an elegant drape.
For posing, given the tatami mats and low wooden table, most compositions were seated. I experimented with extending my legs forward or sitting sideways to elongate the leg lines. A slight lean back with the red folding fan, or simply resting one hand on the table while holding a sake jug in a drinking gesture against the backdrop of the cherry blossom screen and warm lantern glow, instantly conjured that mellow izakaya atmosphere. To enhance visual contrast, I paired the look with Black stockings; combined with the off-the-shoulder and leg-revealing cut, it elevated the allure without feeling over-the-top.
We also scattered small details across the wooden floor, such as fallen pink petals and a black sake bottle with a red calligraphic label. These accents not only filled the frame but also helped immerse the viewer into the scene. From a compositional perspective, the warm light casting soft shadows against the satin sheen gave the set a very rich texture. The entire shoot was truly an enjoyable exploration blending traditional Japanese motifs with anime aesthetic nuances. I hope this photo set brings across that easygoing, heartwarming vibe.
