[Unicorn Cosplay] Azur Lane: Preserving This Season's Beauty in the Sakura Groves

I shot this Unicorn set during the early cherry blossom season last year.

Looking back at that day of the shoot, there was still a slight chill of early spring in the wind, but the sunlight was already carrying warmth. Walking beneath the cherry blossom trees, whenever a gentle breeze blew, pale pink petals drifted and floated down, truly embodying the poetic "speed at which sakura petals fall" mentioned in the caption.

The design of this costume is very exquisite: the generous off-the-shoulder cut combined with the lightweight tulle skirt creates an airy, aqua-blue breathing feel under the light. The streamers in the back and the decorative small wings add to the overall nimbleness. With the character's purple hair and signature ahoge, paired with the White stockings, the atmosphere of the shoot is fully realized. From the color scheme to the tailoring, one can feel the high fidelity to the original design. The ahoge in particular required constant reminders during shooting to keep its angle, as flattening it would weaken the character's feel.

The location was chosen along a riverside sakura promenade. The blossoms were about seventy to eighty percent in bloom with few fallen petals, forming a vast pink canopy overhead that perfectly matched the imagery of falling cherry blossoms. Since the shoot was in a public park, there was a fair amount of foot traffic, but fortunately, the photographer caught the gaps to keep the framing clean for this Outdoor cosplay.

As a cosplayer, shooting in such high-key lighting really tests the cleanliness of the makeup. It can't be too heavy, or it will look cakey and mask-like under glaring sunlight, but it can't be too light either, since white clothing and strong reflections can wash out facial features. My approach back then was to accentuate the tightline and lash layers while using low-saturation taro-purple eyeshadow to echo the wig and maintain color cohesion. I chose light purple contact lenses that closely matched the wig color, making the gaze appear softer.

The compositions in this set include close-ups, medium shots, and full-body frames. My personal favorite is the seated pose in Photo 11. Sitting on the bench with legs crossed naturally, the cherry blossoms on both sides frame the subject right in the center. The layers of the White stockings and the gown's hemline are showcased flawlessly in this posture. To get this shot right, we spent a long time adjusting the flow of the skirt because the tulle is delicate and needed to maintain fluffiness. The transition between the white over-the-knee stockings and bare skin also looked very natural in the photo without any awkward slips.

The streamers on the back were actually tricky to handle, as capturing that casual, wind-blown effect required snapshot timing. The photographer used a fast shutter speed paired with a wide aperture to completely blur out the background sakura trees and pedestrians. This wide-aperture portrait style, combined with high-key lighting, gave the final Sakura Photograph an exceptionally transparent, Japanese-style refreshing aesthetic.

Trying out various poses was also fun—like looking back over the shoulder for a close-up, or slightly tilting the head upward with cherry blossoms framing the foreground, creating a dreamy feel of being enveloped in blossoms. This also tested the stability of the wig; after swinging it around multiple times, the wig still retained its freshly styled shape, proving the importance of thorough preparation.

Shooting in early spring had the advantage of vivid color contrast between the pink blossoms and lush green grass. The downside was having to wear White stockings outdoors—a gust of wind still felt freezing cold. Since the costume was made of breathable sheer tulle and chiffon, it offered zero defense against the chilly spring wind. The makeup artist had heat packs ready in her bag, and after every take I wrapped myself tightly in a coat to avoid catching a cold. But reviewing these photos, I felt very fulfilled, as Unicorn's cool and ethereal aura was preserved intact.

Regarding costume details, beyond the cross-strapping adding a subtle touch of elegance, pairing it with the White stockings significantly elongated my body proportions. Moreover, the height of the white high heels was just right—enabling me to stand tall and straight to project the character's elegance without fatiguing too quickly.

In terms of lighting, because the natural light around midday was quite harsh, the photographer added a reflector on the backlit side to soften the face. Combined with a subtle Japanese-style color grade, the final images look remarkably transparent on phone screens, with vivid yet soft colors.

Often, people only see the perfection in the final photos, but every stage of cosplay—from hair and makeup to the actual shoot and post-processing—involves many nuances worth discussing. For example, wig care: curved bangs must be set with hairspray, or else the wind during an Outdoor cosplay shoot will scatter the ahoge and bangs, degrading character accuracy. Contact lenses also need advance acclimation to prevent frequent blinking from discomfort during shooting.

I remember after finishing that day, the hem of my dress had gathered quite a bit of mud and petals, and upon returning to the dressing room, I found several petals stuck in my wig. Yet it is precisely these authentic outdoor marks that fill the set with warm life—not the sterile coldness of an indoor studio, but a vibrant organic vitality.

Looking at these photos now, I can almost still smell the cherry blossom fragrance from that day and feel the crisp, cool air of early spring.
