Today's photoshoot for Laffey selected several daily and life-like scenes, from the indoor wooden round table to the bed, and then to the top-down perspective jokingly called "washing machine magic," striving to recreate that lazy and slightly clumsy trait of the character. In terms of costume, the blue and white sailor-style coat paired with large areas of pom-pom decorations, as well as the iconic white rabbit ears on the headband, present a strong sense of softness visually. To match Laffey's light purple long hair, the wig was meticulously combed and smoothed. Paired with red colored contact lenses, I hoped to convey that "not quite awake" look through my eyes while constantly staying attentive to the Commander.
In front of the camera, the photographer and I discussed using different angles to showcase the multi-faceted nature of the character. For example, the pose gesturing with one hand on the tabletop deliberately creates a sense of casual rebellion. On the other hand, when adjusting the head ornaments by the bed, the natural state of closed eyes appears very homey. The most interesting one is the top-down perspective from the washing machine; due to the spatial limitations, the rabbit ears and fluffy wig instead became the visual center of gravity of the frame. Paired with a slightly confused gaze, it created a wonderful sense of detachment. There is also the shot biting a donut, aiming to capture a gluttonous and completely defenseless moment.
Trying to integrate life-like interactions into cosplay can inspire the character's own vividness much better than pure studio shoots. The restoration of costume details is highly important, such as the white bunny plushie hanging on the chest, the combination of white tights and black buckle leather shoes, paired with those layers of white fluff, making the texture stand out sharply under natural light. Sometimes I feel that the lazier the state, the more it needs to be supported by meticulous makeup, styling, and props. The daily atmosphere brought by these photos is exactly how I imagine Laffey to look. When shooting this Laffey cosplay, we didn't plan too many high-difficulty poses beforehand but brought this outfit into a casual weekend home environment to experience it. The daytime natural light makes the blue and white color scheme look clear, and the red pupils also serve as a great embellishment in the light-toned frame. Overall, a relaxed camera presence indeed makes it easier to capture the character's charm as a 2D anime girl in this atmospheric photography project.
