This week's Guangzhou Firefly ACG Expo was indeed a double test of stamina and passion. The crowd size on Saturday was beyond imagination, and I was even squeezed all the way over to Nanfeng Place at one point. Although the venue was bustling with noise, for those of us Cosers who want to produce high-quality convention photos, the real headache was actually the off-site area—finding a shooting spot with a clean background and no passersby interrupting is like looking for treasure. Having gone through this practical experience, I've gathered some insights. While the memory is still fresh, I'd love to share some practical tips with fellow hobbyists who are also searching for off-site shooting spots, combined with the photos from that day.
The shooting time that day wasn't particularly early; the sun was already quite high, and the outdoor light was very harsh. Fortunately, the photographer utilized excellent fill light and backlighting techniques, making this primarily white costume look translucent and bright in the sunlight. Although we had to pause several times due to the crowds, as long as we found the right camera angles and made sure to avoid the flow of people behind us, we could capture crisp and clean shots. For example, the pose in the photo where I lift one leg while holding the long staff not only makes me look upright but also avoids ground clutter interfering with the composition. For the outfit I wore, the cutouts at the waist and hips actually demand high-quality tailoring. Coupled with the white short skirt and over-knee white stockings, this dynamic pose beautifully showcases a lightweight feeling fitting for the character.
In terms of props, the purple staff was actually much lighter and easier to control than imagined. And the Unicorn plushie was definitely the cutest mood-maker of the whole set. To match this character's style, I felt that the gaze and body language shouldn't be too flashy. The light purple hair combined with the pure white outfit, paired with a gentle smile or slightly ethereal eyes, fits the character's atmosphere best. This is crucial for capturing the essence of this Anime cosplay.
I tried a few different states at the time: standing while holding the staff, using a single-leg stance to break up any rigid framing; or standing slightly turned to the side, allowing the ribbons on my back to unfurl with the light to add dynamic tension to the frame; and the sets where I sat on the ground, with the sunlight hitting from the side and my white boots reflecting a soft glow, which are also some of my favorites. Sitting poses actually test the flatness of the costume, but fortunately, the ruffled design of the skirt hem and cuffs is quite natural, so it didn't look too bulky when sitting down. Placing the Unicorn plushie beside me or slightly adjusting the angle of my legs naturally captured that sense of closeness.
Actually, there were many trees and building corners in the background on-site, but as long as you open up the aperture to blur out the crowds and architectural lines behind you, you can achieve a very pure visual effect. When the final edits came out, I felt that capturing such refreshing colors, light, and shadow in such a noisy convention environment was indeed no easy feat. Although the shooting process was tough, the moment I saw the final cuts, I instantly felt that baking under the sun and moving around with props were totally worth it.
This off-site shooting experience also gave me a more concrete plan for the next convention and outdoor shoot. If you want to capture clean images in crowded places, try to avoid the direct midday sun, look for diffused light in building shadows or under tree canopies—the photographer's camera settings also hold a lot of expertise. Another thing is that securing props and taking safety measures for the outfit are truly crucial at event venues. In the future, if you attend conventions in Guangzhou and encounter hot sun or crowded throngs outside the Firefly venue, you can also refer to this method of using a wide aperture and backlighting to highlight the subject.
