The instant I put on this black blazer jacket and red-and-black plaid pleated skirt, I knew I had completely slipped into Yoshizawa Kasumi's state of mind. Preparing for this shoot took extensive time: under the studio illumination, the reddish-auburn high ponytail wig needed crisp volume and dimensional texture, while the scarlet hair ribbon had to mirror the crimson pinstripes running through the skirt. Wearing black stockings (tights) and platform loafers, I paid meticulous attention to leg line placement; given her background in rhythmic gymnastics, maintaining a straight spine even while seated was vital—radiating the unwavering resolve of a Phantom Thief alongside the delicate grace of a high school maiden.
Rather than wearing the black-and-gold masquerade mask over my face, I cradled it across my chest. The mask's craftsmanship is exquisite; its gilded relief borders reflected cool glints under the studio key lights, forging an intriguing visual dialogue against the character's warmer hues. Scenography stood as the crowning ambition of this session. To accentuate an opulent yet subtly oppressive atmosphere, we staged a massive gilded birdcage. The cage bars divided the frame's negative space, while crimson backdrop drapery and warm side lighting from the left forged a soft, hazy backlight halo. A sea of scarlet red spider lilies and golden-amber blossoms carpeted the base, providing high-saturation chromatic punch.
To freeze kinetic hair motion, wind blowers ran continuously, sending reddish-brown locks floating in sweeping arcs through the air. Perching atop the elevated plinth inside the cage with crossed legs accentuated the textures of the loafers and hosiery while centering visual focus onto my face and torso. A masked silhouette was subtly integrated toward the rear left, using mirror angles and lighting refraction to layer enigmatic depth. Balancing my sitting posture while aligning the mask's reflective angle required core focus, ensuring light washed across my features while locking a direct, unblinking gaze into the camera—projecting an untamed spirit yearning to shatter her gilded cage.
For makeup, I applied deep scarlet lip tint and sculpted contouring around the eyes to preserve crisp facial definition beneath high-intensity strobes, harmonizing with the auburn wig. Wardrobe textures were meticulously ironed before shooting: the blazer shoulders were kept razor-sharp and every skirt pleat crisp. Posing through the studio warmth grew physically taxing, yet reviewing the playback on the monitor made every ounce of effort worthwhile.
Color grading avoided excessive airbrushing to preserve raw skin fidelity, while boosting the contrast between deep crimson and brilliant gold for a decadent vintage finish. Every facet—from garments and props to set dressing and chiaroscuro lighting—was crafted with deep intention. I love the overarching mood of this series; it was an utterly immersive creative journey.
