I tried buying an ultra-cheap optical snoot lens on PDD, pairing it with my own DIY gobos, to play with a very new way of photography lighting. Seeing others play with projector lenses looked highly intriguing, and my hands were itching to try it out. So I went to an e-commerce platform and found a very cheap entry-level lens, buying it with the mindset that I wouldn't mind even if it failed. To my surprise, the handcrafted inserts actually worked, and the resulting effect was much better than I imagined, which was truly a delightful surprise.

This shoot features Flandre Scarlet from Touhou Gensokyo, and this costume is quite complex in its details. The black semi-transparent mesh ruffles, paired with a red inner lining and criss-cross ties, plus the cross hanging ornament at the neckline, deliver an overall dark yet gorgeous gothic lolita texture. To recreate the character's feel, a crystal wing structure with a metal frame was specially customized for the back, using a colored semi-transparent material to simulate crystal refraction. The teddy bear plush toy held in my arms is also a key prop; it neutralizes the heavy oppression brought by the red-and-black outfit, adding a touch of childishness, playfulness, and gap moe.

The core idea of this shoot is to shape a dreamy atmosphere through light. We deliberately selected a classical corridor with Roman columns as the shooting location, cooperating with a heavy fog machine. The red-purple smoke diffused through the corridor, forming a highly three-dimensional space.

In terms of our photography lighting approach, we abandoned the conventional soft light on the face, instead using a light with hard light characteristics from the side-rear to cast a rim light. This light penetrated the smoke, creating a very distinct volumetric light effect. The strong contrast between light and dark and the elongated highlights on the floor that everyone sees in the frame are precisely thanks to the intervention of this hard light source. After adding the optical snoot lens and DIY gobos, the sharpness of this light can be beautifully blended with the softness of the atmosphere, leaving the frame with a clear focus while being full of a hazy dreamscape feel.

The shooting process was actually quite a hassle because the venue was large, and the arrangement of lights and smoke required back-and-forth debugging. Especially the background light stands visible in the photos and the positions of various light sources required careful coordination with the photographer. In Figure 3, where I hug the bear with one hand and slightly extend the other, cooperating with the intense light in the environment, the overall composition and body proportions are very comfortable, keeping the body and props in the center of the frame while perfectly displaying the crystal wing structure and the fluffiness of the attire.

Friends who do self-media should know that many times, capturing photos with a great dreamy atmosphere doesn't necessarily rely on high-end gear; the key lies in exploring and trying things out yourself. Like this time, using a cheap lens plus inserts, combined with the on-site smoke and hard lighting setup, can achieve a very solid effect. Photography itself is an incredibly creative and experimental endeavor; turning the light and shadow conceived in your mind from zero to one into a tangible, real image provides an amazing sense of accomplishment for this piece of casual cosplay.

Being able to partner with the photographer to complete this piece was a highly joyful creative process. Usually, we are constantly pursuing various equipment upgrades, but occasionally looking back to use these simple and cheap small props can instead inspire a lot of new creative inspiration. In the future, I can continue to ponder how to optimize this imaging effect under different lighting environments.
