[Ganyu Cosplay] Secrets of Liyue: Blending into This Dream of Blue

Putting on this outfit for Ganyu Cosplay and adjusting the bell made me realize that bringing a character to life is far more than just changing clothes. The iconic horns atop the head and the vibrant strands of a Blue hair style required significant time to sculpt to achieve a balance between lively energy and serene composure. For this trial of Anime-style makeup, I experimented with different foundation bases and eyeshadow blending, intentionally deepening the reddish flush along the lower eyelids to bring her gaze closer to the character's signature downward, gentle tilt. Shooting under indoor lighting poses a challenge for color fidelity in final shots; to accentuate the light blue hair and black-and-gold attire, I carefully adjusted the color temperature of studio lights. Beyond emphasizing red-toned eye elements, the makeup focused heavily on contouring to align facial proportions with 2D character head ratios. For the wig, top lighting was utilized during this shoot to clearly reveal hair strands and layering textures, avoiding the flat, dull look of unstyled wigs. The silver bell pendant around the neck carries noticeable weight; though it required maintaining a chin-tucked posture throughout the session, this prop truly breathes soul into the entire look. Regarding costume details, the black off-shoulder design puts neck and shoulder lines under scrutiny, requiring constant posture awareness during shooting. The gold and white stripes on the outfit were hand-applied with finished borders so they wouldn't cast harsh glare under camera lenses. For the blue-and-white silk flower held in hand, I specifically chose stiffer fabric so that even when held aloft indoors, it wouldn't sag or lose shape. Most cosplayers face the challenge of controlling facial expressions before the camera. The character Ganyu inherently possesses both elegance and a touch of endearing airheadedness; thus, rather than striking exaggerated poses, I mostly opted for slight head tilts and a relaxed gaze, using selfie angles to capture this contrast. Rather than stacking flashy lights, I preferred smooth natural shadows to sculpt facial contours. Precise wig trimming was crucial; bangs and sideburn directions required periodic hair wax fixing to prevent stray hairs from fluttering and keep the aesthetic crisp and clean. During the shoot, testing color differences between front-facing phone camera and DSLR revealed that this selfie yielded aesthetics better suited for daily social platform sharing—offering higher color saturation and more luminous skin tones. "Will I appear in your dreams?" For a cosplayer, asking this represents deep immersive connection and self-absorption in character interpretation. In selecting makeup and props, many nuances reveal their best setup only through hands-on trials. For example, the hanging height of the bell pendant directly affects visual center balance, while the angle of the floral headpiece dictates whether the shot successfully conveys her gentle aura. Every cosplay project is a dialogue with the character—transforming 2D flat design into 3D through makeup, styling, and presence, a process inherently rich in fun and fulfillment. For this shoot, I specially selected late afternoon when natural light was optimal, blending fill lights to build a soft main key. Though no additional reflectors were used, adjusting arm positioning still formed clean shadow boundaries across collarbones and jawlines. Selfie angles are usually tricky to control; after multiple attempts, I found the focal length that best flatters face shape while avoiding lens distortion. Post-processing grading adhered closely to the cool, ethereal mood of Genshin Impact's original concept, refraining from excessive skin smoothing to preserve realistic texture for an authentic feel. Accumulating this cosplay experience broadened my understanding of camera positioning and eye contact, using lens perspective to capture that inner tranquility and serenity of a Liyue character.
