This Gwen cosplay costume took a long time from pattern making to final formation. In terms of fabric selection, the outer transparent tulle skirt required finding a material with a laser-reflective effect to showcase that magical sense of layering in front of the lens. While the inner dark blue skirt hem needed to be embedded with golden metal lines and bright blue diamond-shaped gems, with every single piece of cutting and pasting requiring immense patience. The huge blue rose in front of the waist is the visual center of the entire outfit. To make the petals look three-dimensional, a complex support structure was built inside, covered with a glossy material featuring a polarized effect.
Matching the blue rose eyepatch on the right eye with the wig was difficult. To prevent the eyepatch from collapsing the bridge of the nose or having its edges curl up, the curvature of the straps and the base was readjusted. The green-yellow rose hair ornament between the hair on the left side was made with lightweight clay combined with UV resin. The crown on top of the head and the white glitter veil were assembled later; the gold-printed pattern on the transparent veil produces a nice reflection when lit in the dark, perfectly fitting the atmosphere of this frame.
The prop scissors are very large in size, featuring golden painting plus a hollowed-out section in the middle with a blue starry sky pattern. To make it less strenuous to hold, the internal skeleton was lightweighted. However, holding it for a long time still makes the wrist sore. Many poses in the convention photos were trying to find ways to leverage strength or angles, both to showcase the bulkiness of the scissors and to prevent the prop from blocking important clothing details on the body.
In terms of makeup, the teal colored contacts paired with the eyepatch on the right eye visually highlight the eyes more, so a warm-toned red was used for the lip makeup to balance the overall tone. Although the white gloves and the pearl accessories on the wrists are small items, paired with the golden arm ring on the arm, the overall gorgeous feeling instantly bursts out. The lower body is paired with white tight stockings. Originally worried that it would make the legs look thick, actual wearing revealed that it matches the color scheme of this skirt very well, and the calf lines exposed while walking look quite decent in front of the lens.
During the on-site shooting, because the convention background was relatively cluttered and the lighting was also complex, a strong flash was used in the dark environment to highlight the subject, darkening the background to make the white, blue, and gold color contrast more obvious. The entire shooting process required constantly adjusting standing positions to avoid having props and body edges cut off by the frame.
Wearing it for a whole day at the convention is really quite tiring, especially since the skirt hem is quite long and heavy. One must be careful when going up and down stairs or walking, for fear of stepping on the tulle skirt. However, seeing the final convention photos makes me feel that all the previous hard work was worth it. If there's a suitable opportunity in the future, I'd still like to take this set to an outdoor location to try more combinations of light and shadow.
