To pull off that difficult single-leg standing pose, I practiced my balance in a corner multiple times; thankfully, my core was steady, and the shoot went surprisingly smoothly. That oil-paper umbrella was genuinely huge; swinging it in hand required watching out for passersby behind me since the convention hall was packed. The fabric of the costume was relatively structured—the halter neckline paired with tassels and jade pendants swayed with motion, adding great dynamic flair.
Surrounded by many photographers snapping away, I tried looking away from the camera or casually glancing across it to maintain the character's aloofness while leaving ample space to display facial expressions. The light and shadow layering in this set is fantastic; post-processing essentially preserved the original chiaroscuro contrast, only tuning cool-toned color grades to emphasize the translucent, aquatic crispness. The kneeling shot was intended to highlight the drape of the skirt and shoes while offering a fresh visual angle. Shooting during peak convention crowds is physically exhausting; moving across several camera angles and repeatedly squatting and standing left my knees slightly bruised, but seeing the final photos made it completely worthwhile. Finding such a clean background amidst the venue's light pollution wasn't easy. In large spaces like this, I intentionally look for transitional zones between light and shadow, using overhead spotlights to create a natural stage effect.
For makeup, I opted for a clear foundation with red lips, pressing a touch of cool-toned eyeshadow onto the outer corners of the eyes to harmonize with the Blue-themed outfit. The wig was carefully sculpted; the golden metallic headpiece took a long time to secure firmly without wobbling, blending seamlessly with the hair. By the afternoon, the crowds grew heavier, but not wanting to waste the hard-won shooting spot, I pushed through. Holding the massive umbrella made my arm sore, and maintaining expression control was no easy task. During a break, I reviewed the latest shots and noticed one pose looked cluttered due to an unstraightened skirt hem, so we retook it several times. Despite the fatigue, the process brought immense joy.
I love studying strobe placements, and utilizing overhead lights against dark backgrounds to create spatial depth in complex convention lighting is truly a technical craft. On set, passing visitors complimented how pretty it looked and even asked for photos, which was truly heartwarming. My photo selection criteria are usually quite strict: for example, the single-leg stance required pointing the toes, straightening the back, and relaxing the shoulders to avoid stiffness. The other standing and kneeling poses explored different emotional expressions, like looking coldly through the umbrella canopy at the lens. Achieving such clean Convention photos in a bustling hall owes much to background retouching—blurring out crowded passersby and light stands to focus attention squarely on the character. Writing this, I feel like reliving that physical exertion and passion; this costume was exhausting, hot, and stuffy in the summer heat, but I love how hard I pushed myself.
