[Hatsune Miku cosplay] First Convention Photos in the Rabbit Hole & Experiments with Light and Shadow

This set of convention photos of Rabbit Hole Hatsune Miku cosplay marks my very first real attempt at shooting convention photos. My prior understanding of convention photos was limited to veteran photographers or simple one-way fill lights; once standing on the reflective floor myself, I realized there were far more challenges than imagined—just like I wrote in my caption, I had no idea how to pose, feeling rather awkward and unamused.

Let's start with the hair and makeup preparation. The original design features a gradient of ice blue and pink; to recreate this glossy sheen, I switched between two wigs of different color gradations, manually styled the hair wefts bit by bit into twin tails, and embedded translucent pink heart clips at the roots. Such details require strong dexterity and patience, demanding precise curling iron temperatures to prevent frizz. For makeup, the pink glitter blush beneath the eyes served as the finishing touch; instead of strictly replicating flat 2D anime linework, I added subtle soft-focus blending to ensure the eyes remained expressive under the wig and harsh lights.

The venue lighting was a fascinating yet demanding aspect. This shoot utilized typical convention overhead lights combined with intense on-site LED fill lights. This harsh direct light sculpts the model's body contours with extreme clarity, but also casts dark, un-diffused shadows across the floor with virtually no transition—like the stark dark blocks seen in Photos 4 and 6. For a first-timer shooting convention photos, harsh lighting flattens facial bone structure and easily makes the face appear wider, so I constantly adjusted my jawline angle during shooting, striving to find that golden angle where ambient shadows naturally contour the face.

Moving on to the posing dilemma. The line in the caption, "Must I act innocent until I die?" truly reflected my inner thoughts, as pairing a maid uniform with such a coy, coquettish character always made me feel extraordinarily awkward whenever I struck cute poses. In Photo 5 holding the pink cross-eyed bunny plush, I tried hard to project a blend of sweetness and subtle mischievousness, but ended up feeling flustered before the camera. In Photo 6 stepping onto the metal step stool, I had to balance displaying the skirt hem while ensuring the white stockings didn't form awkward wrinkles; how to rest my hands and cross my ankles required readjusting my pose over a dozen times before each shutter click.

Regarding the costume, this Rabbit Hole dress is packed with details. The classic black-and-white palette uses a velvet-like fabric that doesn't feel thin or cheap on the body, offering satisfying weight and drape. The white turned-down collar and ruffled apron have decent thickness, which fortunately provides coverage around the midsection to create a natural transition between the White stocking maid outfit and the voluminous flared skirt. However, when seated (as in Photo 4), tension on the white stockings around the knees and hemlines required great caution; the photographer and I readjusted the cushion placement and leg extension multiple times to ensure the edges didn't create unflattering skin pinching.

I also made deliberate choices regarding the post-processing style. Given the venue's lighting environment, instead of opting for a sugary Japanese soft-focus look, I deliberately retained the cool gray ground texture and high-contrast shadows while subtly boosting facial highlights and reflections on the white stockings, accentuating the warm-cool clash between the black-and-white maid dress and the blue-pink gradient hair. Sometimes, convention photos don't need to be flawlessly airbrushed; retaining the authentic friction of light and shadow conveys the day's true atmosphere and the character's intrinsic tension far better.

Overall, although this first convention photo experience carried some awkwardness and hesitance—with many angles and poses not yet fully relaxed into their most natural state—it represents a valuable learning journey. The photographer constantly provided guidance, and I gradually found the rhythm of conversing with my character. From the casualness of sitting on the floor, to the liveliness of holding out the bunny plush, to the playfulness of stepping onto the metal steps, every frozen motion serves as a footnote to deepening my understanding of the character. Though filled with challenges, witnessing myself gradually embodying the character in this Cosplay photography session is the most genuine joy that cosplay brings me.
