Today, I'm excited to share the behind-the-scenes story of shooting Gongsun Li Cosplay in her Clouds Vow to a Thousand Mountains styling (featuring Die Yu). The entire session was produced in-studio at the Zhengzhou Shiyue Cosplay Experience Store, with teacher October overseeing makeup, photography, and post-production in an exceptionally seamless team collaboration. Honestly speaking, this ensemble features an immense amount of intricate detail: from the silver-grey wig and the rabbit ears entwined with metallic golden vines, to the dress weaving mint green with white gold, suiting up required considerable time for each take. To embody the serene, celestial essence of Clouds Vow to a Thousand Mountains, we made numerous adjustments to both garments and props. The golden floral ornaments at the waist and the asymmetrical hemline, paired with translucent flowing blue gauze sleeves, created a natural, billowing grace with every step.
Setting up the scene also required tremendous dedication: utilizing a reflective floor produced ripple-like water reflection effects, framed by suspended light-blue drapes and colossal translucent floral props. For lighting, we adopted cool-toned setups to cultivate an underwater or celestial wonderland ambiance. To ensure picture-perfect texture, I continuously tested various postures before the camera—such as wielding the clear aqua-current scepter or perching atop white stone pillars. Because this design features prominent leg exposure alongside heavy golden high heels, adjusting seated and kneeling poses required calculated control over my center of gravity, keeping leg lines graceful while preventing the body from stiffening after holding specific angles for prolonged periods.
Prop-wise, that transparent scepter adorned with golden metallic flourishes actually carries noticeable weight; projecting effortless spellcasting motions demanded subtle arm control. Eye contact was another delicate challenge: given the cool, detached aesthetic, overly cheerful expressions had to be restrained in favor of an ethereal serenity. For makeup, we deliberately applied soft lavender eyeshadow to echo the silver-grey hair, complemented by an understated pale-pink lip, directing primary focus to contouring so facial features remained sculpted under cool lighting. The wig required copious amounts of setting spray, and mounting the rabbit ears and golden head ornaments was an elaborate feat requiring countless bobby pins and styling adhesive to prevent shifting during takes.
The entire studio arrangement was steeped in water-element imagery, with sheer drapery suspended mid-air. Adjusting camera angles put the photographer's compositional skill to the test, as side lighting created dynamic chiaroscuro across the fabric folds. Moreover, while the water-flow styling within the transparent scepter was visually arresting, it also reflected glare, requiring careful angle adjustments to dodge harsh specular reflections and keep the prop's contours crisp. The snug waist corset accentuated bodily curves beautifully, though sitting for long intervals inevitably felt constricting; we seized every break between takes to relax the core. The reflective studio floor was a brilliant design choice, though tilting slightly downward or upward distorted reflection proportions, so we ultimately settled on eye-level framing to balance the reflection and figure evenly across the composition in pleasing symmetry.
In post-processing, the goal was to preserve organic light-and-shadow depth without aggressive skin smoothing, retaining true skin texture while enhancing edge rim-lighting on the gold and silver ornaments to make the visual feel exquisite yet authentic. Looking back, while physically taxing, seeing the garments' tactile richness merge harmoniously with the atmospheric lighting made all the effort deeply rewarding. That is truly the essence and joy of cosplay photography—not just delivering stunning photos, but channeling the character's soul through relentless refinement. This shoot also enriched my studio experience, especially in maintaining dynamic bodily expression despite towering heels and elaborate garments (Gongsun Li Cosplay, Clouds Vow to a Thousand Mountains).
