This shoot features Komeiji Koishi from Touhou Project, affectionately known to everyone as Koishi-chan. I prepared the costume and props bit by bit all by myself. That black ruffled wide-brimmed hat is adorned with blue roses, creating a vivid color contrast with the dark green pleats on the skirt hem. The blue orb on the chest is Koishi's iconic element; to recreate that slightly fantastical texture, I specifically chose a glossy material that reflects beautifully under sunlight or studio lights.
The focus of the styling this time lies in the "dark fairy tale" vibe. The white top features many layers of lace and pleating, with delicate black lace trim stitched along the cuffs and neckline, achieving a gothic elegance without feeling overly heavy. The skirt hem features an asymmetrical cut, revealing the white petticoat trim underneath, which creates a layered dynamic effect when walking. The purple heart decorations on the black platform Mary Jane shoes perfectly echo the blue and purple intertwined tube prop in my hands, adding to the playfulness of the overall look.
During the shoot, I experimented with several different emotional states. The first shot, standing while gripping the blade, aims to express Koishi's contrast of being innocent yet dangerous. I tried to empty my gaze as much as possible; since her lore states she goes unnoticed, there was no need for a highly focused stare. For the subsequent two sitting shots, I adjusted my hand positioning, resting the blade on my knees or holding it in front of my chest. Combined with that nonchalant sitting posture, it actually brought out the unique temperament of her character much better.
This outfit has many details, especially when moving around and sitting down—the layering of the skirt, the way the lace on the cuffs drapes, and the tightness of the beads and straps all affect the texture of the final frame. The photographer is excellent at capturing this sense of motion within stillness. We didn't use complicated lighting; just a basic softbox paired with a white background wall, allowing the colors and textures of the costume itself to become the visual centerpiece. During post-processing, I preserved the original skin tone and clothing textures without excessive airbrushing. I feel that in Touhou Project cosplay, texture is sometimes more important than perfection; a few fabric wrinkles and natural shadows actually add a sense of realism.
The shooting process was actually very pleasant; although there were quite a few props, everything went highly efficiently once they were sorted out. The character of Koishi holds immense charm for many Touhou fans, and her story carries a sort of detached beauty. While portraying her, I kept contemplating how to convey that state of "existing yet being ignored" through body language. I am quite satisfied with this work myself. From costume creation to makeup, styling, and the execution of the shoot, every single step strove to get as close as possible to the temperament of the original work. I hope this set of photos allows everyone to see Komeiji Koishi from a different perspective; that sense of mystery hidden beneath the fluffy skirt hem is exactly the core of what I wanted to express this time.
