[Reimu Hakurei Cosplay] Winter Snow and the Blue Shrine Maiden: Bringing a Touch of Touhou Project Wonder to the Snowman

This time, I shot Blue Reimu cosplay set against a snowy backdrop. Shooting Touhou Project characters outdoors in winter is a test of both stamina and the cold resistance of one's makeup and styling. Starting with the costume, the blue-and-white color scheme looks exceptionally harmonious in the snow. The outer layer is a blue dress with subtle jacquard patterns, while the white ruffled lace at the neckline, cuffs, and hem adds rich layering. The skirt hem features an alternating white-and-blue design; the outer fabric is crisp and structured, while the lining is soft, so it doesn't cling to the legs when the wind blows and beautifully holds the skirt's silhouette. The temperature on the day of the shoot was below freezing; to maintain the best condition on camera, I placed heat packs inside the dress, though my hands were still somewhat stiff from the cold.

The props were the most eye-catching part of this makeup and styling. I held a golden bell prop in my right hand and pulled the rainbow ribbon with my left. The golden bell's reflection in the snow was gorgeous, and the colorful ribbon broke the monotony of the pure white surroundings, effectively guiding the viewer's gaze. During shooting, keeping the props steady was essential; holding arms raised for prolonged periods quickly leads to soreness, so we opted for rapid candid snapshots while keeping the wrists naturally curved.

Handling light in the snow was a tricky aspect during the shoot. The fill light in the first photo was strong, creating a lovely rim light, with the background softly blown out in high key, rendering the face with great clarity and translucence. We shot with a wide aperture to blur out distant snowbanks and tree branches, keeping focus sharp on the main subject and props. The second photo used a wide-angle composition to showcase the overall environment. In snowy scenes like this, controlling the lighting contrast between the face and the background is crucial to avoid blown-out highlights or murky shadows. In post-processing, I mainly focused on fine-tuning the color temperature—shifting slightly cooler better fits the snowy Winter cosplay vibe, while preserving natural skin texture without excessive liquifying adjustments.

We also specially brought a golden handbell and rainbow ribbon as props because colorful elements act as visual anchors in the snow. Although Blue Reimu's dress itself is relatively thick, presenting a dynamic posture required continuously adjusting the height of my shoulders and the curve of my waist. In the cover photo on the left, turning the body slightly sideways with a natural gaze toward the lens fully highlighted the garment's side profile. I am very satisfied with the final result. Although outdoor shooting in severe winter is arduous, seeing the fusion of the blue skirt and white snow along with the cool-toned halo ambiance in the finished photos makes all the effort completely worthwhile.
