Halford has always had an approachable and friendly aura in Azur Lane. Bringing her from the 2D world into reality, the core concept was to preserve the airy lightness of her original pink-and-white color palette.
For fabric selection and tailoring, I deliberately avoided heavy textures. The upper body features an off-the-shoulder blouse with multi-layered ruffles and sheer tulle patchwork, which, combined with draped pink ribbons, visually elongates the neckline to create a delicate and nimble silhouette. The pink bow at the back is another key visual element, requiring careful movement to prevent creasing whenever I turned. The headpiece was where I invested the most effort: the black-and-white bunny ears not only have great volume, but also feature a bonnet-style ruffled structure and side black bows, offering rich texture and depth. To secure these pieces firmly, I built in hidden internal supports to ensure they kept their shape during dynamic action shots.
Selecting the right plush props was equally essential. The large white plushie I held is practically a physical manifestation of an iconic element from her original artwork; I specially hand-stitched blue-and-white snowflake embellishments onto its body, matching the white fur for a truly dreamy makeup and styling touch. During shooting, this plushie served both as an extension of my hand gestures and as a narrative anchor, naturally softening the pose and enhancing the character's gentle approachability.
For the photography setup, we opted for a solid, light beige-pink backdrop, relying purely on studio lighting rather than intricate set dressing to establish the mood. The key light was diffused from slightly above the front to make skin tones look clean and translucent, while a rim backlight traced the silver-white wig to create an ethereal, luminous glow. Studio shooting offers complete control over light and shadow, allowing facial expressions and garment textures to shine with maximum clarity. I adjusted my seated posture to angle slightly sideways while hugging the plushie, highlighting the top's craftsmanship while showcasing the leg lines in a composition that captures Halford's coy, slightly innocent charm.
As for post-processing, the overlaid 2D character illustration in the bottom-right corner is a fun little easter egg. We aligned the perspective and lighting during 2D compositing so that the real 3D person and the 2D illustration coexist harmoniously in the same spatial dimension, echoing a parallel universe. This technique requires smooth lighting transitions to avoid looking harsh or overly dim; fortunately, the original ambient light was soft and bright, allowing for a seamless blend.
Looking back, the trickiest part was balancing the heavy headpiece. When tilting my head or leaning sideways, the long ribbons and oversized ears could easily slip or obstruct my view, so I had to constantly adjust the wig and headwear between takes. Fortunately, the final results turned out beautifully, capturing that blend of sweet pink softness and cool elegance. As an anime cosplay interpretation of Halford from Azur Lane, I aimed not just for visual accuracy, but to weave her gentle and hardworking spirit into every gaze and gesture. Capturing and sharing my love for this character has been an incredibly rewarding experience.
