[Black★Rock Shooter Cosplay] BLACK★ROCK SHOOTER: On-Site Record of Patent Leather Trench Coat and Heavy Cannon

Bringing this Black★Rock Shooter cosplay gear to the anime convention this time, I shot a set of off-site photos with a rather cool-toned texture. The focus of the costume lies heavily on this heavy-duty patent leather trench coat. Its physical properties mean that it captures light sources extremely sharply in front of the lens; as long as a beam of light hits it, its crisp outline and luster surface immediately emerge. However, this material is truly not breathable in reality. Once the venue temperature rises, the fully unzipped styling is not only to restore the character's aura, but largely also to give myself some breathing room, otherwise it would be very difficult to maintain the shooting state.

The two props brought this time, the long sword and the heavy mechanical cannon, posed a significant challenge in terms of weight during the shoot. The cannon, in particular, was very heavy and cumbersome to move around with, but when executing low-angle poses, it could also serve as a great physical support point. Leaning against it or propping it on my leg allows the upper body to relax while maintaining the tilted angle of the posture. The long sword was used to balance the visual center; when needing to express a tense standing posture, it is much easier to control than a spear.

Regarding facial makeup and hair, to fit the character's sense of detachment and cold temperament, the eye makeup was done with deep definition. Paired with the dark short wig and sharply defined stray hair pieces, it looks visually very sharp. The matching black gloves and black-and-white color-blocked high-heeled long boots maintain a unified black-and-white tactical/mecha-functional style from head to toe.

The overhead light sources at the convention venue were quite chaotic, arranged in an orderly grid of ceiling lights. While framing, the photographer intentionally avoided the cluttered crowds and photography equipment in the background, utilizing unconventional low-angle low shots or wide angles to stretch the body lines. The advantage of this perspective is twofold: first, it emphasizes the reflective texture of the patent leather trench coat; second, it utilizes perspective relationships to make the volume of the heavy weapon feel more oppressive. When the body tilts and leans against the prop, this sense of balance matches the character's state perfectly.

The compositional emphasis in several final convention photos differs; some emphasize the visual extension of the boots and leg lines, while others place the focus on the geometric shape contrast between the person and the long cannon. To restore the character's cold and rigid atmosphere, my facial expression was basically maintained in a state without much emotional fluctuation throughout the process. During the shoot, it was also necessary to maintain the smoothness of the trench coat, avoiding scratching the patent leather or catching too much dust while moving around the venue. Although carrying such heavy equipment all day does bring physical fatigue, when getting the raw on-site images and seeing that the reflection of light on the patent leather material perfectly matches the desired cold, mechanical vibe, all the hard work on location and the weight of the props became completely worth it. I hope this set of photos successfully restores some of the character's original texture.
