The convention photos from this Chengdu Anime Convention have finally been organized. This set of Embodiment of Scarlet Devil Flandre Scarlet cosplay really consumed a lot of my energy. From costume pattern making to wig styling, and then to the preparation of props, every step was thought out on how to restore the slightly dangerous yet delicate temperament of the Scarlet Devil Mansion's second young mistress.
To match the character's visual effect, I specially chose red contact lenses, and deepened the red-toned smudging in the eye makeup part, trying to present a doll-like texture in front of the lens. The wig is a classic orange large wavy curl. Before going out, I used a lot of styling products to grab a fluffy feel, but after walking around the convention a few times, it was still blown a bit frizzy by the wind. Walking around a high-temperature venue wearing such a thick and heavy wig is truly a test; sweat kept flowing down, but every time I saw the final photos on the camera screen, I felt everything was worth it.
The details of the costume are very tedious. The edge of the red-and-white corset-style top is sewn with multiple layers of white lace and ruffles. The beaded choker on the neck and the bracelet on the wrist were also selected after repeated comparisons. To match the overall color scheme, even down to a single earring was deliberated for a long time. The white wide-brimmed hat is both a highlight and a burden because due to its large volume, walking in the crowd often requires caution not to bump into others. The brim is decorated with various flowers, and a pair of red heart-shaped sunglasses is perched on it, an accessory that adds a touch of playfulness to the overall styling. The lower body is a layered fluffy skirt; although pretty, it is especially easy to trip over when changing locations in the venue.
The beige cross-strap platform sandals on my feet look really good when worn, and the platform visually lengthens the leg proportions, but walking in them is truly a test of foot strength. After walking around the anime convention for a day, my ankles and knees were a bit sore and aching. I wore white short socks with lace ruffles on my legs, matching the red-and-white skirt hem, and the overall color tone is very unified. To fit the shooting theme, I also specially brought a red apple and a brown teddy bear wearing lace clothes as props.
The shooting process actually tests physical strength and coordination a lot. The location was inside the convention venue, with many other booths and passersby in the background. To avoid the cluttered background, the photographer chose a large aperture, using the circular lights on the ceiling as background bokeh to create a sense of clarity under a dark background. I sat on the carpet, trying various sitting postures and gestures. Sometimes holding the brim of the hat with a hand, sometimes holding an apple, or pretending to hand something to the lens, these subtle movements all required constant adjustment of the wrist angle and the focal point of the gaze. Because of wearing this outfit, movement was restricted, and every time I changed posture, I had to move slowly. The photographer patiently captured candid shots on the side, striving to capture the emotion in my eyes.
The small teddy bear and the colored rhombus decorative bracket among the props were also temporarily adjusted and placed on-site based on the composition. The red apple provided a great color contrast against the dark background, and every time I raised it, I had to pay attention to the posture of my fingers to avoid blocking the line of sight or appearing stiff. Lighting was a huge challenge; the ambient light at the convention site was relatively mixed, making the photographer's fill light crucial. How to make the fill light hit the face naturally, avoiding overexposure or shadows that are too heavy—we repeatedly tried several angles on-site.
In addition to taking pictures, this styling was also recognized by many fellow fans who love the Touhou Project at the anime convention, and everyone was very friendly in collecting photos and communicating. That resonance born from shared interests is hard to experience in daily work. Some friends came over to ask me how the wig was styled to be so fluffy, and others asked if the lace on the clothes was sewn by myself. These interactions made me feel that a whole day of hard work wasn't in vain.
The entire shooting process, from setting up the venue to finishing, took nearly two hours. Although tired, being able to materialize my favorite character through the lens and leave behind a set of satisfying photos gives a very real sense of inner satisfaction. When taking off makeup back at the hotel, I really felt like my whole body was falling apart, but looking through these final photos and recalling every single moment of adjusting expressions and postures back then, I felt this fatigue was also a kind of enjoyment.
