I completed this convention photoshoot set for Sakuya Izayoi from Touhou Project right on site at the Wuhan CGF Anime & Game Festival. The character designs across the Touhou series have always fascinated me; deciding to bring Sakuya Izayoi to life this time involved extensive prep ranging from wardrobe tailoring to pre-shoot lighting discussions. To make this navy-and-white Maid outfit truly shine, attention to fine details was imperative. The wig was trimmed and styled with braided twin side pigtails, crowned with a crisp white lace headband, while makeup emphasized vivid crimson contacts and slightly sharpened brows to channel her signature composed, icy demeanor.
The wardrobe was the central focus of preparation. The multi-tiered white apron is trimmed with dense lace and ruffled hems, complemented by the intricate pleating of the navy underdress. Outfits like this wrinkle with notorious ease on a busy convention floor, so once dressed, I largely avoided deep seated rests and maintained an upright stance. The full ensemble carries substantial physical weight; combined with over-the-knee White stockings and black platform Mary Jane shoes, it visually elongated my leg lines wonderfully, though pacing the halls all day proved quite taxing on stamina.
The shoot was staged in the main lobby, framed by polished marble flooring, grand architectural pillars, and rows of recessed ceiling downlights. To capture her combat readiness, I brought along a silver longsword and a black dagger. Biting down on the dagger looks effortless and fierce on camera, but in practice, holding that pose easily causes jaw tension. To preserve natural facial composure, I continually modulated bite pressure, leveraging the blade's foreground placement to discover the most organic camera angle. Extending my left hand outward with fingers curled in a spellcasting gesture while thrusting the sword forward with my right demanded sinking my center of gravity low, feet planted wide with core braced, allowing the dress hem to flare naturally without visual bulk.
The photographer shot this set on a 35mm prime lens at f/2.8, 1/200s, and ISO 200. The wide aperture melted the ceiling pinlights and distant staircases into soft, creamy bokeh discs, letting the figure pop with clarity. Ambient convention illumination was predictably complex, yet the combination of overhead spotlights and reflective marble flooring created rich chiaroscuro layers.
Scouting a clean background and an unhindered camera angle at an anime convention is always a test of patience. We often had to freeze poses in place for extended stretches waiting for background crowds to thin out, all while constantly adjusting the drape of the skirt and weapon angles to avoid awkward lines or proportions. Seeing the final frames realize such polished composition and lighting is entirely thanks to the photographer's patient collaboration. Embodying Sakuya Izayoi's commanding presence through cosplay was an exhilarating creative journey, and I hope this visual collection brings everyone aesthetic delight.
