For this Skadi the Corrupting Heart shoot, I chose an underwater setting to recreate that oppressive yet intensely dramatic deep-sea ambiance. The gown with its red-and-black strapping and metallic spiked crown gained considerable heft submerged in water. To capture the hair drifting weightlessly through the current without plastering awkwardly across my face, I spent extended takes keeping my eyes open beneath the surface while regulating my breathing rhythm. The foremost hurdle in underwater photography is light refraction; lighting calibrated on land undergoes dramatic shifts in beam angle and color temperature once submerged. To accentuate the colossal crimson orb atop the staff, we brought high-lumen waterproof fill lights. The icy tones of the azure waters colliding with the warm crimson radiance of the staff created a fierce visual contrast, which became my favorite element of this series.
The entire production was far less serene and effortless than it appears in the final frames. While appearing securely seated upon the throne, sustaining that suspended seated posture underwater while actively fighting the water's buoyancy demanded immense core stability. The staff in my hand served not only as a visual prop, but as a crucial physical fulcrum to stabilize my center of gravity. Water resistance turned every minute movement into slow motion. Furthermore, the luminous bokeh motes drifting around me were not painted in post-production—we submerged laser units that bounced off underwater bounce cards to create genuine optical halos. Under the illumination, the blue-violet floral arrangements took on an ethereal, dappled luminescence.
To prevent water from irritating my eyes and compromising the crimson contact lenses, I spent substantial time practicing underwater micro-expression control. I wanted to convey not mere vulnerability, but an imposing, suffocating stillness. Seated upon that gothic throne amid drifting specks of light, I kept my gaze locked at a precise angle so the scarlet gleam in my eyes remained piercingly vivid against the cold-toned water. The hem of the gown and the gloves soaked up water rapidly, growing heavily weighted; the slightest broad motion stirred underwater currents that disrupted the hair's organic float. Consequently, before every shutter release, I had to reset my posture and hold absolute, unyielding stillness.
From submerging to wrapping the shoot, the physical drain was enormous, but seeing the intense clash of crimson and azure in the final frames made every breath held and every battle against buoyancy entirely worthwhile. This styling carries immense textural detail, from the metallic spikes on the staff to the cascading folds of the skirt, delivering underwater textures that exceeded my wildest expectations. I hope everyone can feel this quiet, profound strength born beneath the deep sea.
