This time, I cosplayed Sparkle from Honkai: Star Rail at the Wanyou Yingli Anime Convention. With the event photos fresh out, let me share my reflections on this shoot. The crowd was much larger than expected; day one was truly packed shoulder-to-shoulder, and the venue's air conditioning couldn't quite keep up, leaving me in a state of being both overheated and excited. Fortunately, the second day was slightly less crowded, freeing up more space to capture specific angles and setups, which instantly elevated the whole experience.
This red-and-black Sparkle outfit is packed with intricate details: the bells at the neckline, the sheer pink mesh on the sleeves, the jacquard patterns and tassels at the waist, and the red ribbons on both sides of the hair—I was thoroughly pleased with the accuracy of every ornament. In particular, the shoes and the red crisscross straps along the legs took quite a while to tie during dressing. Though tedious to put on, the final look carried immense visual tension before the camera, and paired with black fingerless leather gloves and a white fox mask, the ambiance was immediately dialed up to max. The prop was a red-and-white handgun; holding it in hand, whether aiming or letting it rest naturally, seamlessly matched the character's quirky yet subtly dangerous aura.
There was plenty of mixed lighting at the convention, and the conditions differed vastly from studio shoots. Huge thanks to photographer Yingdi for his patience and expertise, using flashes to suppress the background, highlight the subject, and capture the contrast of the red and black attire with rich texture. I personally love the two shots of sitting while hugging my knees and lying flat with legs raised high—one captured that playful, carefree mood, while the other utilized a flat-lay perspective where the red straps and platform sandals against the white plush rug delivered strong visual dynamics. Despite the bustling environment, the photographer expertly guided my posing, capturing relaxed and lively moments.
After finishing makeup and putting on the wig and mask, walking through the crowd drew a remarkably high turn of heads. Capturing such high-contrast, vibrant characters depends heavily on lighting and composition, since red can easily look flat against dark backdrops; however, Yingdi used reflectors to fill facial light, giving facial features three-dimensional depth while preserving natural skin texture. Post-processing avoided overdone filters to maintain authentic colors, primarily brightening catchlights in the eyes to keep the expression looking vibrant and full of energy.
Every convention cosplay is a physical workout, especially with lightweight outfits featuring straps and red-black paneling. While mobility is easy, you constantly have to check whether the silhouette or accessories have shifted. Nonetheless, seeing myself portray a beloved character in peak condition in the final photos brought immense fulfillment. Many fellow fans recognized the character on site and asked for photos, offering great encouragement and making all the time spent studying outfit details and practicing poses feel thoroughly worthwhile.
