[Youmu Konpaku Cosplay] Mid-Air Sword Slash Attempt in Touhou Fanon Styling

The photographer's vertical composition shot truly nailed the dynamic energy of this styling. The high-ceiling venue paired with a dense matrix of top lights gives the entire frame a naturally cool-toned sci-fi atmosphere. To create the illusion of \"floating in mid-air\" during the shoot, I was required to apply horizontal force to freeze the action, which combined with the large translucent ribbon wrapping around my body to achieve the smooth and visually impactful cascading effect in the photo.

This time I cosplayed Youmu Konpaku from Touhou Project, with adjustments made to the costume and prop details based on Touhou fanon design. Rather than strictly adhering to the original work's most common color palette, personalized color-blocking elements were added. The top is a comfortable white ruffled blouse with wide sleeves that allow for easy sword movements; the skirt features a layered design of light blue and white, with subtle red flower accents preserved on the hem—specifically to maintain color brightness and depth when posing alongside the large white ribbon.

The biggest highlights are probably the white skull ornament at the waist and the red-and-black sneakers on my feet. In the original design, Youmu Konpaku often wears outfits that facilitate action. When working on this Touhou fanon look, while keeping her sharp battle demeanor intact, I also wanted to introduce a more everyday, lively, and modern feel. The sneakers not only made standing poses during long shoots much easier, but also broke the monotony of the large white and light blue palette, making the overall look more grounded.

As for props, besides the long katana, the element occupying the largest portion of the frame is actually the extremely long translucent ribbon. It took a lot of effort to transport it into the venue, but with the combined lighting from the venue and the photographer, the ribbon presented a semi-translucent, softly glowing texture that greatly enhanced the visual sense of extension and weightlessness. Paired with my sword-thrusting pose, the final set of photos struck a great balance between physical space and visual illusion.

I have to say that modern professional comic convention venues are incredibly accommodating. The steel truss framework overhead and the high spotlights form a natural studio setting; this grand, spacious backdrop easily brings the character forward. Throughout the shooting process, photographer Canzhi handled light sources with incredible precision—the front-side fill light perfectly illuminated facial features and the metallic sheen of the katana while preserving the depth of the dark background. To achieve a \"full-screen\" visual saturation, we had to repeatedly adjust the ribbon's curvature and leg force placement for every single shot to ensure both body lines and props reached their optimal extension.

In fact, shooting in an indoor multi-light environment can easily lead to glare or unnatural catchlights. However, we primarily utilized the point light sources on the ceiling as background embellishments, keeping the eyes clear and bright. White short hair with black hair accessories are classic elements of Youmu Konpaku; under cool light, the black-and-white contrast becomes sharper, matching her serene and cool aura as a half-phantom, half-human.

My biggest takeaway after completing this shoot is that although freezing dynamic action poses consumes a lot of physical energy, the final result truly lived up to our meticulous preparation of adjusting the skirt and ribbon beforehand. The charm of characters in the Touhou Project series lies in their diversity, and fanon interpretations give cosplayers and photographers immense creative space. Reinterpreting a character's specific aspect through one's own understanding is a genuinely fun process.
