[Youmu Konpaku cosplay] The Cherry Blossom Tale of the Hakugyokudou Gardener

The theme of this shoot is Youmu Konpaku from Touhou Project. Choosing this full bloom cherry blossom season, paired with overall Japanese-style Lolita cosplay attire, aims to express the agility and vitality of this Hakugyokudou Gardener as perfectly as possible. The main clothing color uses a subdued dark green paired with large areas of white ruffles, while dark pattern bows and lace-up tassels on the chest serve as exquisite design details. The lace stitching at the neckline is very refined, matching the layered pleats at the cuffs; the overall tailoring combines the lightness of Lolita style with the crisp, clean neatness unique to Japanese fashion. The skirt hem has rich layers: the inner layer is a pure white lace petticoat, covered by a dark green skirt with black lace trim along the edges, delicately embroidered with small white flower motifs for high recognizability. Frog closures and tassels echoing the bow tie were specifically added at the waist to give the entire outfit more dynamic movement when moving.

As for props, I paired it with Youmu Konpaku's signature swords. The sheath is matte black wrapped with white cords; I also hand-bound several sprigs of pink cherry blossoms with long red tassels hanging on the sheath. This not only echoes the pink flower sea background but also prevents the prop from looking rigid, adding softness to the Cherry blossom photography session. The wig was meticulously trimmed—thinning the silver-white locks created a light, layered depth, while straight bangs and slightly messy side locks neatly restored the character's subtly boyish charm. Bright blue-purple contact lenses were carefully chosen, combined with fairy-like pointed ears, giving the character an ethereal otherworldly presence. Paired with fair base makeup and soft pink lip makeup, the entire face conveyed a gentle yet firm feel under the sunlight.

It was an honor to collaborate with photographer Kirisame Wakaba for this shoot. Shooting under backlit conditions perfectly fit the texture of this look: soft afternoon sunlight passed through gaps in cherry blossom trees from behind, dying a faint halo of pinkish purple along the edges of the silver wig, even showing the fluffiness of hair strands softly lifted by the wind. Highlights brought by natural light are the most full of life. The overall tone leans toward fresh and bright, producing frames with a wonderful sense of intersection between anime and reality. Opening the lens aperture fully turned the cherry trees behind into a dreamy pink bokeh, perfectly highlighting the subject.

Regarding the prep process for this costume, a lot of thought went into it. Initially, I considered doing a completely traditional kimono or Shinigami style for this character, but after seeing this dark green Lolita design proposal, I felt this fan-made fusion concept was much more interesting. The white shirt of this outfit features a soft cotton-linen texture that reflects light beautifully under sunlight, while the outer dark green fabric carries a subtle matte sheen—visually forming an aesthetic of contrasting light and shadow. In particular, the large dark patterned bow on the chest was very complex to craft, with hand-made porcelain frog closures and tassels in the center, making it the most time-consuming part of the garment.

Speaking of the cherry blossom details on the sheath, they were added to make up for the simplicity of the prop compared to original lore details. Adding these cherry blossom elements not only broke the fierce feel of holding weapons continuously, but also added a flower-viewing atmosphere to the photos. Regarding hair, although silver-white short hair seems simple for everyday wear, trimming and styling it actually tests technique heavily. To keep it from flipping in natural wind, I sprayed a proper amount of setting spray before shooting and prepared several extra combs to adjust the bangs at any time. Sunlight was quite ample on the shoot day; backlit shooting often dims the face due to high contrast, so we placed a small reflector board in front to ensure clear details of face and eye makeup while allowing background cherry blossoms to show a glowing halo. Using elf ears wasn't purely for gimmick, but rather a prominent feature of character settings in Touhou Project; wearing them instantly breaks ordinary human perspectives, transforming the character into a native of the fantasy world. To prevent props from stealing the spotlight from the character, I stood slightly turned to the side during filming, keeping arms and legs at a relaxed, angled pose so the posture wouldn't look stiff.

As an enthusiast cosplaying Touhou Project characters, I feel a deep emotional resonance with Youmu Konpaku—both in her dutiful figure silently guarding Lady Yuyuko at Hakugyokudou, and in her persistent, tireless pursuit of swordsmanship. Although she is often teased by Lady Yuyuko in the lore, her earnest seriousness is her most charming aspect. Under this Japanese-style Lolita fusion outfit, I attempted to show her dignified composure as a swordswoman while preserving her flexible resilience as a young girl. I am personally very satisfied with the results of this shoot, making it a concrete presentation of my understanding of the character.
