[Remilia Cosplay] Gothic Moments of Touhou Project's Lord of the Scarlet Mist

Choosing to do a Remilia cosplay from Touhou Project this time was the result of extensive homework on her noble vampire persona—cool, aloof, yet with a hint of childish charm. From costume prep to finalizing the hair and makeup tone, I aimed to stay as true as possible to the dark yet gorgeous gothic style of her original design.

First, let's talk about the dress, which took up most of my energy to adjust. A white backless lace dress paired with dark red bows and ribbons at the neckline, cuffs, and waist creates a striking visual color contrast. The backless design along with the black criss-cross leather straps on the back adds a clean, sharp layering beneath the intricate lace ruffles. The cuffs are made of fluffy, sheer mesh fabric tied with red cords, allowing the fabric's movement and drape to flow naturally with every gesture. To complement this outfit, I chose a light blue layered short wig, trimming the bang layers and sideburns repeatedly so the hair strands align seamlessly around the edge of the elf ear cosplay pieces. For the eye makeup, I expanded the red smudging and wore reddish contact lenses, striving to recreate that mysterious glow emanating from her eyes.

Emotional direction during the shoot was another major focus. Posing in the first photo by leaning against a white pillar and looking back captured a relatively relaxed moment. Cool blue ambient lighting hit the white pillar and the background glass curtain wall, harmonizing perfectly with her cool-toned hair. This environmental cool tone brought out the character's icy detachment and sense of isolation. The second photo aimed to reveal a contrasting side of her. Crouching on the staircase, supporting her forehead or headpiece with one hand, paired with the voluminous skirt and stacked dark red decorations, conveyed a momentary glimpse of exhaustion, vulnerability, or solitude beneath her glamorous exterior. This combination of standing and crouching poses enriched the storytelling across the photo set.

In post-processing, I continued with this dreamlike filter featuring cool tones with a purple hue. To prevent the white lace from overexposing in the highlights, the overall exposure was kept relatively suppressed, preserving rich shadow details and textures in the tulle dress. As a coser, wearing outfits laden with straps, ribbons, and lace presents the challenge of preventing these elements from tangling or shifting during poses. Fortunately, adjustments were made promptly on set, and the final output matched my expectations. Works infused with such rich fantasy themes often don't require overly dramatic performances; capturing the character's aura in a quiet atmosphere yields far better results. I truly enjoyed this immersive photoshoot experience.
