For Day 1 of the World Line Anime Convention, I cosplayed Saigyouji Yuyuko from Touhou Project. I spent quite a while preparing in advance for this look. For the wig, I selected a bob cut with subtle pink tones, taking special care when trimming the bangs so they snugly framed my face to avoid looking overly round. The outfit is a blue-and-white Japanese style cosplay lace dress; the crisscross ribbons at the neckline require precise tying so they lie completely flat without looking bulky. The lace bonnet headdress is heavily detailed with elaborate pleats and tiered netting, carrying noticeable weight that required numerous bobby pins secured into the wig for stability. The fabric features a delicate sheen that captured gorgeous texture under sunlight, though it snags easily, so I had to be extremely careful when putting it on and taking it off.
The purple folding fan was crafted with the help of a prop-maker friend, detailed with cherry blossom motifs, geometric patterns, and calligraphic lettering. While posing, I discovered that partially concealing the face not only adds artistic depth to the composition, but also shields facial shadows to give the eyes extra sparkle. The lighting at the venue was quite tricky—the overhead venue fixtures were fairly harsh, so the photographer and I searched several spots before using a reflector in a corner area to soften facial contours. To complement this soft lighting, I deepened my eyeshadow slightly so the camera wouldn't wash out the makeup.
When cosplaying Yuyuko, presence is paramount—one must strike a delicate balance between the ethereal void of a Netherworld ghost and opulent elegance. I strove to keep my gaze faintly languid and melancholic, slowing down movements to avoid anything overly expansive. The moment of holding the fan while raising my eyes slightly was captured wonderfully by the photographer. The convention hall was packed on the day, making maneuvering in this dress slightly cumbersome; the wide hem and sleeves could easily get stepped on, so I had to lift the skirt while walking. Yet whenever passersby recognized me and asked, 'Is that Yuyuko?', it brought immense happiness, reminding me how love for characters is shared so warmly. Meeting fellow fans and helping each other adjust our costumes is always the most touching part of conventions.
I also encountered many fellow Touhou Project enthusiasts inside the venue, chatting about recent cosplay insights and snapping convention photos together. The convention experience was wonderful; although exhausting, immersing myself in the character on-site was incredibly fulfilling. Every cosplay is a brand-new adventure, and I hope to keep bringing beloved characters to life. There are still areas to refine in hair and makeup—for instance, blending the eye makeup even more softly and ironing out tiny lace edges more meticulously. I am very pleased with this shoot's output and will retouch the full set when time permits. If you ever run into me at conventions, feel free to come grab a selfie!
