This photoshoot in the outfield of the Guangzhou Firefly ACG Expo during the Guangzhou Anime Convention required a lot of preparation in advance, but standing in front of the lens still made me a bit excited. This red and white color-schemed look can be described as full of details, and just the wig and makeup took up a lot of time. The white twin tails interwoven with red ribbons offer a highly rich visual layer, and the black and white rabbit-ear hair accessory on the top of the head is also a finishing touch. For the makeup, the red heart pattern under the eyes and the blending at the outer corners were specifically intensified, paired with pink colored contacts, aiming to present a feeling that is both playful and a bit mysterious. Compared to daily makeup, this slightly exaggerated face was much more rewarding to shoot under the strong light of the convention's outfield.
In terms of costume design, the V-shaped lace at the neckline paired with that clover-shaped choker, as well as the slightly exposed black inner lining and golden circular badge below, give the chest area a wonderful focal point. The styling of the sleeves is highly characteristic, featuring a black and white checkerboard pattern and wide sleeve cuffs similar to playing card prints, which, along with those playing card props that can be held in hand, fill the poses with a sense of interaction. The touch of the black gloves fits quite snugly, making it easy to maintain the look when gesturing. The frozen movement in the first photo is considered one of the most satisfying snapshots of the entire set, and the overall composition is relatively full.
The subsequent photos also experimented with seated positions and half-body close-ups. Especially for the one sitting on the ground, a white plush carpet was intentionally spread under my feet, paired with a trolley case and matching thick-soled black boots, adding a touch of the casual and free-spirited vibe of a convention outdoor photoshoot. The trolley case next to me with "MARKET CAR" written on it was also a prop borrowed temporarily on-site. Although there were still some plastic bags and other clutter on the ground, as long as the composition avoided them or post-processing handled it slightly, it actually added an authentic feel of resting midway through browsing the convention. The soles are very thick, and paired with white short socks, they visually elongated the leg lines, which is highly practical for this short skirt styling.
Wearing this gear under Guangzhou's sultry weather, the breathability was actually quite alright, but the wide sleeves and long gloves still felt a bit stuffy when moving around. Fortunately, the lighting on the day of the convention was great, and with the photographer's fill light, the three high-contrast colors of red, white, and black were fully revealed. The interaction atmosphere on-site was also excellent; many fellow fans passing by could instantly recognize who I was portraying, and that feeling of being loved by everyone melted away a lot of the fatigue of the entire day.
Recently, I've been studying how to capture the unique sense of prop interaction characteristic of this type of character. This time, I tried a combination of blur and focus in the foreground and background, placing the playing card props on the edge slightly in front of the lens to give the frame a sense of depth. Outdoor convention shoots are like this—unexpected situations happen at any time, but because of that, many unexpectedly vivid moments can be captured. That's about it for this casual snapshot set from the Firefly ACG Expo. I hope the results of this dedicated coordination allow everyone to see more visual possibilities for this look; striving to restore the essence of the character is exactly where the greatest joy of cosplay lies.
