The theme of this shoot is Komeiji Koishi. When discussing with the photographer in the early stages, we decided to focus on the expression of the light and shadow atmosphere and physical dynamics.
When I first saw this costume, what attracted me most was the multi-layered ruffles at the neckline and cuffs, as well as the fabric patchwork that carried a slight faded vintage feel. Since the character's setting inherently possesses a mysterious and unique visual style, I hoped to bring out the texture of these clothing fabrics through changes in ambient light.
The location chosen for the shoot was a scenic garden area with a stream and a bamboo forest. The first scene was by the stream, with moss-covered stones and shallow water beneath my feet. To fit that natural elf-like atmosphere, the photographer specially brought mist-making equipment. Sunlight streamed down through the gaps in the leaves, forming a very obvious Tyndall effect. Combined with the smoke, the light beams felt remarkably tangible, creating a beautiful display of light and shadow in the forest. During backlit shooting, the circular glowing lantern I held in my hand overlapped with the natural light, casting a beautiful golden rim around the edges of the costume, which turned out beautifully for this piece of cosplay photography.
To make the skirt fly up, I tried single-leg standing and jumping movements several times. The soles of my shoes were actually a bit stiff, and it wasn't easy to maintain balance on the rocks by the water. Fortunately, I was quite satisfied with the curve of the skirt spreading out in the final shots.
In this series, the photographer intentionally captured some frames where my face was obscured by light and shadow, or backlit silhouettes. Just like the description says, 'a collection of blurry faces,' it wasn't a mistake, but part of what we envisioned. I feel that for this character, instead of showing clear expressions, using only body language, silhouettes, and the luster of hair strands to tell a story actually conveys that feeling of wandering in a secret realm with a fleeting presence.
Later, the scene shifted to a Chinese-style wooden corridor. The light and shadow here were completely different, with pillars and tiles forming geometric lines of alternating light and dark. I tried running and spinning between the corridor pillars, with the wide sleeves and skirt fluttering in the wind during movement. On the wooden boardwalk section, to complete a set of stepping actions, I repeatedly adjusted my jumping height and angle. Although my legs were a bit sore after the shoot, seeing that kind of vibrant motion in the photos made me feel everything was worth it.
The compositions of the last two scenes were very interesting; the photographer used a wide-angle, low camera position. The huge greenish eyeball prop in the frame was intentionally placed directly in front of the lens to create a perspective distortion, forming a highly magical sense of immersion. Overall, this shoot really pushed the correspondence between ambient light and costumes to the limit. That color tone of interwoven golden yellow and dark green, combined with the water mist and tangible light beams, gave each photo a tension between reality and fantasy. I hope everyone can feel the free, hazy, and fairytale-like atmosphere we wished to express through this set of atmospheric photography from Touhou Project.
