This time, the photoshoot theme was set to Corpse Voyage—sleeping inside a chest filled with bones to portray a Rin completely distinct from the traditional image of pushing a cat cart. Inspired by the impression that the music of Subterranean Animism gave me—resembling an ongoing cave exploration culminating in an endless discovery of treasures, both brisk and gloomy—elements of Gemstones and crystals were incorporated into the set. Before deciding on this shoot, I carefully studied ZUN's original artwork and realized that Rin actually has human ear auricles, retaining cat ears alongside them—a truly wondrous trait of Gensokyo youkai.
For makeup and wardrobe, I paired red hair and red pupils with cat ears, accentuating the crimson eye color in the eye makeup. The costume was a satin dress piecing together dark emerald green and black; the fabric offered great sheen, matched with ruffles, lace, and a large bright blue bow at the chest. Sharp, long red manicured nails paired with vintage silver rings amplified an aggressive, eerie allure. For the lower body, bare legs with black Mary Jane high heels were chosen, which not only elongated the legs from high angles but also injected an unusual vulnerability and seduction into the Dark Gothic mood.
The shooting process relied heavily on lighting and shadow sculpting. Yansi ooo, serving as both photographer and set designer, was exceptionally professional, washing the entire space in rich red light while piercing the background through translucent plastic film and artificial fog using high-intensity cool white light to create an intoxicating, hazy ambiance. Faux skulls and luminous deep-blue crystal flowers were scattered across the coffin corners. Lying inside a glass chest laden with skeletons while adjusting poses in high heels was physically demanding—especially striving for perfect composition across sharp faux bones and slippery satin while maintaining sharp facial gazes. The black dress, red hair, skulls, and contrasting red-blue warm-and-cool lighting formed a powerful visual tension that fully showcased the character's aura.
Departing from previous dynamic styles, this shoot favored static high-angle perspectives and close-ups. Positioning the lens above the coffin, a wide-angle lens looked straight down or across. For shots focusing on the body and legs, the flat-laying angle combined with black high heels conveyed a chilling yet alluring demeanor resting lifelessly inside the coffin. Reviewing raw shots with the photographer, we were thrilled with the striking contrast of red hair bathed in crimson light and its uncanny beauty under cool lights. The translucent clarity of the Gemstones and crystals made the aesthetic distinct. Despite a few scratches from the skeleton props inside the coffin, the final outcome made every effort completely worthwhile.
