[Reimu Hakurei Cosplay] Borrowing Moriya Shrine's Donation Box for a Bit

Carrying this newly made shrine maiden outfit, I stood in the connecting corridor between Halls 2 and 3 of the exhibition center. Today's lighting and environment at the Xiamen anime convention were much better than I had anticipated. Although passersby occasionally walked near the fill-light stands, the expressions captured in the candid shots were spot-on. The wooden donation box in my hand was handcrafted a week in advance; to achieve a nice texture on camera, we specifically blended wood wax oil and rubbed it down multiple times, writing and painting the Kanji characters on it by hand. Holding it inside the venue gave a genuinely ceremonial sense of sweeping \"digital offering money\" right into my pockets.

Because the clothing design skews thick and warm, utilizing lots of white faux fur trimming, combined with the giant red ribbon headpiece atop my head and lace tassels on both sides, the perceived temperature on site was actually quite a bit higher than the ambient temperature. Getting dressed required nearly forty minutes of preparation—from wig trimming to putting on red contact lenses, down to adjusting the obi belt and cord knots, fearing every step might lack detail. This red-and-white color scheme created a strikingly vivid color contrast under ambient lighting, especially against the teal-blue tiled floor.

Today, the photographer guided a storyboarding sequence rich in dynamic feel. From standing while holding the donation box, to sitting on the floor with talisman paper, and finally balancing the wooden box on my head for a relaxed, goofy pose, the entire shooting process was actually quite rushed due to constant crowd movement in the venue. Fortunately, the hairpiece straps were secure enough, and finding my center of gravity felt quite natural. The text talismans on the folding fan were also simplified according to the original series style; when holding it for poses, the cardboard nicely guided line-of-sight toward my facial features.

Looking back at these final images, what satisfies me most is recreating the character's seemingly casual yet subtly money-loving personality. While not intentionally mimicking every single gesture, the visual impact of props and the red-and-white color palette pushed overall character recognition very high. Throughout the shoot, I avoided forced or over-the-top fan-service poses, maintaining a relatively elegant yet lively demeanor, which aligns well with my understanding of Reimu Hakurei.

The atmosphere on the day of the Xiamen anime convention was extraordinarily lively, with many fellow fans around me wearing heavy cosplay outfits of various kinds. Luckily, the venue's air conditioning was powerful; otherwise, makeup would easily melt under the thick white fur trim and cotton fabrics. The LED tubes used for fill light provided bright key lighting from the front; even if the hall background was somewhat cluttered, widening the aperture blurred out the backdrop and made the subject pop instantly. A few passersby noticed my donation box and jokingly asked if they should toss physical coins in, so I instinctively struck a pose shielding my face with a talisman, capturing a delightful moment in the final shots.

I've been working with this look for a while now; from costume tailoring and prop prototyping to the final convention photo set sharing, there was plenty of fine-tuning along the way. The only slight regret is that the venue's light sources were rather harsh, creating sharp highlights on my face under cool tubes, but the photographer applied soft-focus processing during post-editing, yielding a translucent skin texture while preserving plenty of detail in my facial makeup and red eyes.

The poses across these photos cover standing, sitting, and reclining micro-expressions; my personal favorite is the final shot capturing the moment I held the box over my head, where that subtle sense of imbalance kept the image from feeling overly serious. Overall, presenting this work was a high-quality offline shooting experience. Given future opportunities, I would love to bring this Reimu Hakurei Cosplay look to an event with softer lighting for another shoot as part of my ongoing ACG Renaissance journey.
