This time at the anime convention, I cosplayed Ulrich von Hutten from Azur Lane. While preparing for this cosplay, the parts that required the most thought were the choice of fabric materials and handling the details of this costume.
The entire Patent leather outfit cosplay features glossy black patent leather as the highlight, paired with contrasting red on the inner lining, creating a powerful visual impact. Under the complex indoor lighting of the convention floor, the patent leather material produces a very striking reflective effect, cleanly accentuating body lines while bringing an inherently crisp and cool edge. To maintain the costume's glossy finish and comfort while wearing it, I did a lot of research when purchasing fabrics and pattern drafting, and fortunately, the final texture turned out very satisfying.
For the hairstyle, I specifically created a blue-cyan gradient highlight effect over a black base, paired with layered bangs covering one eye, which softened the toughness of the patent leather gear while adding a touch of easygoing personality. Compared to simple long hair, this short hairstyle paired with the overall red-and-black color scheme makes the look appear much sharper and more powerful.
Holding the flag prop tested my physical coordination significantly. During the on-site shoot for Convention photography, photographer Mu Bai was extremely professional, guiding me through various standing poses across different angles and centers of gravity. Because the garment fabric was tight and high-heeled long boots restricted joint mobility, striking heroic poses without looking stiff required considerable strength control. The pose in the second photo—turning slightly sideways, holding the flag with one hand, and placing the other hand on my hip—is my personal favorite, as it showcases leg contours while allowing the patent leather material to display richer, more dimensional light and shadow variations under the lights.
Although the convention environment was crowded and busy, blurring the overall background through lens depth of field actually highlighted the character's presence. Light sources at this venue leaned toward overhead lighting, and patent leather is particularly sensitive to direct light. To preserve details without blinding glare, the photographer put much thought into adjusting shutter speed and aperture. That's the essence of 2D photography—beyond the character itself, balancing ambient light with subject materials is equally crucial.
Ulrich von Hutten cosplay naturally gives off a calm, composed demeanor combined with the quiet confidence of absolute strength. In this makeup, styling, and shoot, I strived to embody that character mindset of \"no need for loud declarations; victory will prove everything.\" The photos feature no overly complex background special effects, relying instead on direct eye contact and body language to convey the character's sense of power.
I feel the true meaning of cosplay lies in recreating and reshaping a character that exists only in the 2D world through costume, hair/makeup, and on-site performance, granting her authentic vitality. I'm thrilled to complete this photo set at this expo, and deeply grateful to the event staff and fellow fans who stopped by to cheer me on.
