[Sakura Matou Cosplay] Recording the Fate/Grand Order Photoshoot Under Night Cherry Blossoms and Rain

The combination of night cherry blossoms and rainy days is definitely a challenging yet highly effective set in this year's shooting plan. Invited by photographer Ermi this time, catching the cherry blossom season around the Qingming festival, I attempted this set of works leaning toward a cool and melancholic style, focusing on the coordination of purple hair color and white lace attire.

In terms of makeup and styling, due to tight time constraints, the hair section focused heavily on the bangs and two strands of pink-purple highlights to enhance the visual focus of the face. For the costume, a white semi-translucent lace top was chosen, paired with a cream-white patched long tulle skirt. This skirt presents excellent layers under diffuse light, especially when captured by snapshots with a flash at night, making the fabric texture clearly visible.

I feel that this wide black velvet bow belt is the soul of the entire look. It not only cuts the upper and lower body into a sharp black-and-white proportion, but also counteracts the swelling feel brought by large areas of white through color tightening. For the sake of frame aesthetics, it was paired with basic black Mary Jane high heels, which beautifully modify the leg lines when spinning and walking.

Regarding equipment, our primary light source was ambient light combined with an off-camera flash. In the night cherry blossom forest, Photos 1 and 3 relied on the flash to dim the background and used a large softbox to illuminate the face, separating the figure from the background in an extremely dense cherry blossom environment. Shooting at night heavily tests the lighting setup; the slightest carelessness can cause unnatural reflections on the character's face, so we spent quite a bit of time adjusting the lamp positions.

When coordinating with that transparent umbrella, we specifically utilized the reflection of water droplets. This umbrella is not only a tool to keep off the rain, but also a large soft-light filter. When raindrops fall on the transparent umbrella surface at night, due to the refraction of the light, it adds a lightweight layer of watery glow texture to the face. Especially at the moment of spinning and swinging open the skirt hem in Photo 3, the curvature of the umbrella surface just happens to reflect the character's agility, with the black belt and black shoes forming excellent visual anchors in the frame.

Moving on to the shoot in the early morning after the rain, the lighting shifted from artificial light sources to soft diffuse natural overcast light. The entire environmental tone took on a cool, bluish-purple tint from the surroundings, with wet roads and scattering fallen blossoms. This scene actually heavily tests the balance of composition, so Photos 4 and 5 adopted central symmetry or rule-of-thirds compositions, attempting to utilize the tunnel feel formed by the cherry blossom trees on both sides to stretch the depth of the frame.

In terms of expression, because the character inherently carries a melancholic temperament, I chose more snapshots that do not look directly into the lens compared to conventional bright shoots. In Photo 5, holding the bouquet with both hands to block most of the face in a slightly lowered head state was also doing its utmost to transmit an inward-drawing emotion. The cool atmosphere forms a contrast with the brilliant spring cherry blossoms, which just happens to fit the core temperament of shaping the character.

The biggest surprise was that the rain during the shoot was intermittent, making the fallen blossoms on the ground incredibly compliant, paving a path of flowers along the texture of the water flow. Although the shooting cost included quite a bit of extra time cleaning the camera and wiping the lens, I have to say that this humid, cool atmosphere instead carried more narrative flavor than a bright sunny day. After the final photos came out, I personally loved the texture of the night cherry blossom season, which has an illusory sense of breaking the fourth wall. After all, it is not easy to find such a completely clutter-free, layered cherry blossom background in reality.

A rainy environment poses high demands on both the coser and the photographer; one must be careful to protect the hair from getting tangled by rain and watch for changes in the rain to press the shutter. Constantly adjusting the umbrella's position and angle within this process truly tests on-the-spot reactions. On the whole, this attempt at colliding flowers, umbrellas, and night cherry blossoms with my outfit counts as an exploration of a cool-toned style. Those subtle light and shadow changes in life can indeed bring unexpected surprises to Portrait photography during our Anime cosplay journey. This is a memorable experience in night cherry blossom photography.
