For this shoot, we deliberately chose the twilight-to-nightfall window of the Blue Hour, setting up on an open rooftop parking deck. To capture the sheer, damp clarity of a rainy day, the wardrobe centered on a classic sailor-style JK uniform paired with white knee-high socks and black penny loafers, complemented by an array of long-handled transparent umbrellas as props. To harmonize with the melancholy undertone of a rainy night, the overall palette was anchored in cool tones. For gear, I brought the Sony A7M4 mounted with a 50mm f/1.2 lens. That wide aperture was indispensable in such low-light conditions—not only did it grant faster shutter speeds to freeze falling rain streaks in the dim glow, but it also produced a dreamy shallow depth of field, dissolving ground puddle reflections into gorgeous bokeh circles.
The rain varied from gentle drizzle to sudden downpours throughout the shoot, posing a real challenge for lighting. We deployed portable strobe heads fitted with softboxes, directing the key light from an oblique angle to illuminate the face and raindrops across the umbrella surface. This ensured translucent, luminous skin tones while transforming the wet canopy into a glittering sheet of refracted highlights. The Blue Hour window is notoriously brief; the tranquil indigo of the dusk sky clashed exquisitely with the warm amber of street lamps, prompting us to trigger the shutter in a race against the fading light. To enrich compositional layering, the photographer scattered open transparent umbrellas across the foreground, creating organic framing and depth perspective that channeled all focus onto the subject.
Standing in a JK uniform across the waterlogged rooftop with raindrops pattering rhythmically against the canopy, the cold wind was certainly biting. Yet a Clear umbrella possesses a magical quality: it blends ambient light with the prismatic refraction of water droplets, sending ripples of liquid light dancing across the vinyl with just a gentle twist of the handle. Before the lens, I let my body relax into an unforced state—glancing back over my shoulder, tilting my face toward the night sky, or gazing quietly down into the reflective puddles beneath my feet. Water trickled from the tips of my hair while the pleated skirt swayed in the breeze; that damp, quiet, and slightly wistful mood is impossible to replicate on a sunny afternoon. The 50mm focal length closely mimics human vision, requiring the photographer to continually reposition for fresh framing—from intimate half-body portraits to full-body perspective shots—gently guiding my mindset into serene reverie. Free from contrived, rigid posing, this set was an organic capture of candid emotion in the night rain. Raindrops kissing the transparent canopy as light and shadow interwove through the dusk made this Rainy day photoshoot an utterly rewarding exploration.
