This time, I teamed up with my close colleague and great friend to shoot a duo Japanese style photography session in sailor suits. Since we get along wonderfully at work and even share somewhat similar facial features, coming together before the camera felt completely relaxed without requiring any forced adjustment. Having decided on a youthful campus theme, we invested considerable thought into our wardrobe selection. The tops featured classic summer short-sleeved Sailor suit cuts with a crisp white base, accented along the collar and cuffs by navy blue stripes. For bottoms, we paired them with navy pleated skirts; to enrich visual layering, we deliberately chose contrasting neckwear—one a white ribbon bow, the other a bright yellow scarf—creating a subtle, charming point of contrast in the details.
For footwear, we both wore black loafers paired with white knee-high White stockings. This combination not only sculpted our leg lines beautifully but also aligned the overall look with the aesthetic of Japanese high school girls in JK uniform attire. Before heading out, we discussed how, while white stockings look gorgeous, one must exercise caution to keep them pristine during shooting; every time we sat down or leaned against railings, we took great care to smooth our skirts and check our hemlines and socks.
The location was chosen beside the city light rail tracks. Metal railings, expansive lush green lawns, and distant traffic signs came together to evoke the nostalgic ambiance of a Japanese youth cinema film at first glance. To enhance narrative depth, we brought several small props: a vintage silver camera, a blue-canned Calpis drink, and our respective school bags. Having these in hand meant we never had to worry about awkward hand placement, and our interactions unfolded with effortless grace.
At the start of the shoot, we stood alongside the metal guardrails. I raised the camera pretending to snap a selfie while she leaned in looking at the display, or I sipped from the beverage while she flashed playful hand gestures toward the lens. The photographer kept reminding us not to stare directly into the lens, but simply to chat as we normally do. We genuinely started gossiping about amusing workday moments, teasing one another and laughing non-stop. Expressions captured this way were extraordinarily candid and alive, entirely free from the rigidity of stiff posing.
Later, we transitioned to sit along the stone steps by the road. This posture proved absolute perfection: sitting on the steps showcased the sweeping pleats of the skirts alongside the harmonious pairing of White stockings and black loafers. To elongate our leg lines visually, we crossed our legs with relaxed posture, leaning slightly backward. By then, evening was setting in with delightfully soft golden light, and the amber glow of the sunset bathed the white sailor blouses in translucent brilliance. Using a wide aperture, the photographer blurred out the background tracks and foliage, centering visual attention purely upon the two of us. To eliminate harsh shadows, we subtly shifted our seating angles until the gentle light kissed our faces and garments evenly.
The greatest pitfall in a Duo photoshoot is stiff body language, but thanks to our close bond in real life, whether resting a hand on a shoulder or holding hands, everything flowed organically. Leaning over the railing to glance downward posed a slight angle challenge, yet the resulting frame turned out incredibly sweet. We explored varied stances along the railing—her leaning against the fence while I candidly aimed the camera, or both of us playfully pouting together—every interaction brimming with relaxed camaraderie.
The entire shoot was delightfully effortless. This session not only rewarded us with deeply satisfying photos but also offered a refreshing escape outside of office hours. Projecting our everyday colleague bond into this youthful campus scenario brought fresh novelty and wonderful unspoken chemistry. The greatest magic of Japanese style photography lies in documenting authentic, unscripted moments; without heavy retouching, preserving genuine color and ambient light is more than enough to touch the heart. I eagerly look forward to more delightful creative collaborations together in the future.
