Night shoots always come with staying up late to edit, and this set of Zenless Zone Zero Nico cosplay photos is a classic product of a crazy nocturnal schedule. By the time I finished hair and makeup and arrived at the location, it was already late at night. The city footbridge was flanked by cool blue-and-white neon lights with almost no pedestrians around, and that quietness allowed us to shoot freely and capture the exact atmosphere we wanted.
As for the cosplay outfit this time, the suede trim along the edge of the light blue vest has great texture. The metal pendant and choker on the chest reflected clear rim lighting under the streetlights, while the yellow bow hair accessory contrasted vibrantly with the orange wig under the high contrast of the night scene. I had combed the wig beforehand; although the wind was a bit strong during the shoot, it actually added lively hair flow without looking stiff or plastered to the scalp, which is what I personally love about outdoor night portrait shoots.
Working with my photographer friend @Longjingting was super comfortable, with zero pressure to rush the schedule. Since we know each other well, we could adjust our vibe at any time. For instance, the angle looking down with my chin tucked in the upper photo was something we stumbled upon while trying to catch spontaneous moments. The shot looking straight into the camera in the lower photo is the expression I feel captures the character best—it preserves her confidence, but thanks to the soft night environment, tones down the aggression and adds a touch of casual, everyday flair.
Speaking of post-processing, even though it was on a graveyard schedule, editing was actually quite therapeutic. Considering the cool neon ambient light in the raw photos, I fine-tuned the color temperature and tint to keep the skin tones warm. This created a cool-warm contrast against the cold blue background, highlighting the brightness of the face and hair. I compressed the highlights slightly to prevent direct night lighting from overexposing the makeup, while brightening the metallic sheen of the gold ornaments so they wouldn't get lost in the shadows. Compared to studio shoots that strive for ultra-clean lighting, I actually prefer these gritty, ambient night lifestyle shots; preserving the background noise gives the frame a more cinematic feel.
Many friends might not understand why we had to shoot in the middle of the night. On one hand, night lighting has an irreplaceable mood—the city neon lights feel just like the cyber street scenes from our favorite game, which, paired with the outfit elements, immediately maxes out the atmosphere. On the other hand, shooting at night means not dealing with curious stares from passersby, allowing me to be bolder with my poses for a much more relaxed result. Although it was nearly dawn by the time I got home, looking at those naturally captured moments after retouching completely wiped away the exhaustion of staying up late.
This set didn't deliberately chase commercial filters or heavy post-production effects; it was mainly about capturing the authentic texture of the night scene and slightly correcting the ambient color cast on the skin tone. Walking down the midnight streets in this cosplay outfit felt truly magical, as if I had genuinely stepped into that world with its unique urban rules. Compared to deliberate posing, this casual, everyday lifestyle feel captured candidly between friends is truly what brings me the most joy in casual cosplay.
