This time, I shot a sleepwear look for Taihou from Azur Lane. Right after finishing hair and makeup in the dressing room, I snapped some quick mirror selfies on my phone to casually document this red-and-black outfit.
For the costume, I chose a red dress with sheer tulle and lace patchwork. The delicate black lace trimming the neckline, paired with the ruffled off-the-shoulder sleeves, lends the upper body a light, airy, and fluffy feel. The skirt hem is also a puffy mini length covered with an outer layer of sheer black tulle, through which the contours of the legs subtly show. The central highlight of this look lies in the coordination of accessories—specifically the combination of over-the-knee thigh-high socks and delicate garter straps, featuring Black garter stockings trimmed with black lace that echo the lace elements of the top.
For hair, I wore a long black twin-tail wig with smooth, naturally thinned ends. Tied on both sides of the head with red ribbon bows, this detail firmly anchors the character's signature style. Paired with a thin black choker around the neck, it makes the neckline look more slender. In terms of makeup, peachy-pink and brown eyeshadow added depth, while blush concentrated under the eyes created a subtle, slightly flushed rosy glow. Combined with a brick-red semi-matte lip tint, the reddish hues maintained visual continuity across the entire palette.
Under the cool, bright white bulbs around the vanity mirror, the phone camera crisply captured the lustrous sheen where light fell on the red fabric and black stockings. I was mindful of adjusting my arm angle and the phone's distance, as a fully extended arm holding a phone can be distracting in the frame. In the first selfie, I deliberately lifted the skirt hem outward to highlight the intricate combination of the stockings and lace garter straps, giving my posture a natural, relaxed stretch. For the second shot, I shifted angles, lowered the hem, rested my chin on my hand, and tilted the camera slightly to evoke a playful mood.
The background is a typical backstage behind-the-scenes dressing room: a wooden desk with drawers cluttered with cosmetic organizers and snack bags, a green plastic stool and rolling suitcase behind me, and discarded clothes scattered on the table. Though messy, this uncurated scene represents the authentic, lived-in reality cosplayers encounter right before heading out. The evenly spaced vanity bulbs illuminated my face clearly, minimizing facial shadows.
When portraying Taihou, I wanted to convey her languid yet alluring aura through this sleepwear ensemble. The red-and-black contrast inherently brings a retro, elevated elegance, while the pairing of a puffy skirt with over-the-knee socks injects quintessential anime-inspired tension. As an exercise in Casual cosplay, phone selfies excel at preserving that spontaneous, candid feel—unlike polished DSLR studio shots, the mirror reflections and subtle blur feel like genuine slices of life.
The behind-the-scenes backstage clutter is an inseparable reality of cosplay culture; behind every glamorous look is often a cramped space crammed with luggage and props. Transitioning from the backstage mess to dazzling glamour on camera is one of the most intriguing aspects of the cosplay journey. With great lighting and good energy, taking these two photos served as a wonderful, everyday memento of my Azur Lane Taihou cosplay.
