[Klee Cosplay] Midnight Sand Dune Adventure in Search of the Great Dodoco King

Holding the camping lantern prop prepared for this shoot, my photographer and I drove out to this remote sand dune on the outskirts of town. It was already late at night, and the starry sky overhead was truly breathtaking. Before this, packing Klee's red-and-white elf-style travel Cosplay outfit into my luggage took up an entire large suitcase. In particular, that huge red pointed hat had to be carried carefully by hand the entire way to keep the brim from getting crushed. The white puff-sleeve top, red skirt adorned with small white flowers, and white thigh-high socks were surprisingly eye-catching against the backdrop of sand and night.

The lighting design during shooting was the key to these photos. Since the starry sky and sand dune environment were extremely dark, standard outdoor lighting would easily wash out the faint glow of the stars. After discussing for a long time, the photographer and I decided on a bold lighting plan: using a single high-brightness bare light from the front-side, pointed directly at me and the sand. This not only separated me from the pitch-black background but also illuminated the sand textures beneath my feet, giving the sand a rich, granular texture under the light and shadow. Meanwhile, controlling the brightness and distance preserved those delicate stardust trails in the dark distance. This sharp contrast between light and dark perfectly captured the tense yet mysterious vibe of a treasure-hunt adventure.

The actual shooting process was funnier than expected, but also much more exhausting. Although it looks like only two photos were taken, we ran around repositioning several times. In the first wide-angle shot, because the dune was a steep slope, I had to stand on the incline holding up the lantern while gazing into the distance—finding my balance was incredibly tough. The soft sand underfoot kept sliding downward, so I had to brace firmly on one leg to keep my posture upright. It took many takes before we found the balance point where the skirt fell naturally without my body leaning forward. The second half-body closeup went much smoother, clearly capturing the costume details. The photographer lowered the camera angle slightly to shoot upward, connecting the lantern to the starry sky for a grander feel.

For this outfit, I think the most outstanding design features are the layered red-and-white skirts and the black bow at the neckline. Combined with the lantern in hand against the pure black background, it truly looked as though a star had fallen to earth. Although running through the sand in this full gear was physically draining and the desert night wind was freezing, seeing the final result made all the effort completely worth it. Many people were curious about what challenges arise when doing night Sand dune location photography. To be honest, beyond keeping makeup clean, the biggest hassle is preventing sand from creeping into clothing folds and shoes. Shaking out a handful of sand after taking off my shoes was totally normal, but that actually added a genuine sense of real exploration to the experience.

Looking up at the starry sky, I felt as if I were truly standing in some mysterious corner of Teyvat in Genshin Impact. I stumbled upon this location by chance—an untouched spot rarely visited by people, where the raw terrain and deep darkness after nightfall were perfect for building an undisturbed fantasy world. It felt like finding an anime sanctuary right in the real world. Working with a skilled photography team made everything twice as effective. While finding the light positions, our teamwork was seamless. Although the lantern was an auxiliary light source, we spent extra effort in post-processing to fine-tune its brightness and hue, giving it a translucent glow rather than just flat yellow light.

During preparation, I referenced many in-game motions and settings to capture the character's temperament. But on location, the most crucial part was connecting with the site and environment. The outfit and props laid the foundation, while the wind, tactile sand, and deep night sky formed the complete soul of this photograph.
