I finally scheduled and completed an on-location shoot for Vodyanitsa cos from Genshin Impact. The 'azure wide-eyed fish' mentioned in the post is actually my fond nickname for this look; during the shoot, that line 'Odette, hurry up and build a snowman with me!' was looping constantly in my head, filling the whole studio set with Snezhnaya's crisp chill and playful whimsy.
To recreate the garment's tactile quality, extensive preparation went into early production. For the hair color, I picked long curls in a soft cyan-blue tone, trimming the bangs to just graze the eyebrows to soften the gaze. The two white blossom ornaments atop the head weren't mounted with ordinary clips; instead, I secured them with a dual layer of styling spray and hidden bobby pins so they wouldn't dislodge and ruin takes during hand-raising poses.
The costume's structural tailoring is quite intricate. The metallic circular disc ornament across the chest carries noticeable weight, so I added concealed snaps inside to keep the bodice from sagging or warping. The cyan-green satin ribbon and metallic waist cincher needed to be laced exceptionally tight to sculpt the silhouette; while it made breathing a bit restricted, enduring it throughout the shoot was well worth it for the elongated bodily proportions. The sleeves feature voluminous white sheer tulle, which I actively fluffed and suspended with arm movements to infuse the captures with airy lightness.
One of the creative highlights this time was choosing to shoot barefoot. While not explicitly mandated by the character lore, I felt that bare feet paired with a delicate pearl anklet complemented the translucent, pure color palette while elongating the visual lines across seated and reclining poses. For example, in shots seated on the wrought-iron chair with legs slightly lifted and toes pointed, angling the camera from a lower vantage point elongated the leg lines gracefully.
The set was adorned with lush arrangements of blue and purple faux blossoms, paired with white wrought-iron furnishings and ornamental screens. Studio lighting was dialed relatively bright, requiring continuous mindfulness of facial shadow falloff. I asked the photographer to prioritize direct front lighting to accentuate the glossy gleam of the blue contact lenses while keeping skin tones dewy and luminous. To harmonize with this dreamlike aesthetic, my facial expressions alternated between wide-eyed innocence and a touch of coquettish aloofness—especially during finger-heart and chin-resting gestures, where the gaze demanded genuine connection with the viewer.
The entire shoot was quite demanding physically, as holding that weightless, buoyant posture requires constant core discipline, but seeing this 'azure wide-eyed fish' come to life in the finished frames brought me immense joy. Which shot feels most like the Vodyanitsa of your imagination?
