[Formidable cosplay] Azur Lane New Year's Day Firefly ACG Expo Shoot Share

During the New Year's Day holiday at the Firefly ACG Expo, I specially prepared a cosplay plan for Formidable from Azur Lane. Having wanted to shoot a black-and-white gothic look during earlier convention visits, I found that Formidable's in-game personality—a mix of elegance and playfulness—matched remarkably well with this silver-white twintail wig and maid costume setup. The venue at the Canton Fair Complex for this Guangzhou Anime Convention was crowded, making high-quality photo generation in such a spacious yet complex environment a test of the photographer's snapshot speed and lens control.

Pre-shoot hair styling took a lot of time. This ultra-long silver-white twintail wig not only reached almost to the knees, but the black-and-white bow headpiece atop was also quite heavy. Paired with straight-cut center-parted bangs, it took nearly an hour of on-site adjustments and pinning to keep the strands fluffy, light, and untangled while moving around. As for the costume, I chose a black-and-white color-blocked design. Combining white lace trims with black cutout strap elements retained the sweetness of a maid dress while incorporating a sleek gothic edge. The chest cutout design, shoulder straps, and black lace choker paired with soft pure white tights created a strong visual contrast. On my feet, thick-soled black Mary Jane shoes matched the overall look while providing better center-of-gravity stability during standing poses.

The gear used for shooting was the Viltrox 75mm f/1.2 large aperture lens. Using this lens at an anime convention is actually very fitting. In dense crowds, opening the aperture up to f/1.2 completely blurs out venue ceiling lights and passing convention-goers, separating the subject from a cluttered background. Simultaneously, the 75mm mid-telephoto focal length provides great spatial compression for half-body and full-body portraits, making body proportions look leaner while sharply resolving skirt and hosiery details. The photographer kept things dynamic rather than posing statically, capturing moments like lifting the skirt on one leg or tilting the head with hands clasped, benefiting from fast shutter responses and natural expressions.

For pose design, to highlight Formidable's lively and confident vibe, I tried varied body language. One-leg skirt lifts and backward glances visually lengthened leg lines, emphasizing the lower-body ensemble via the contrast of white tights against black shoes. Meanwhile, top cutouts, long arm sleeves, and headpiece tassel lines enriched screen layering. Tall stature and long hair advantages shone through this gothic maid outfit without feeling top-heavy.

In post-processing, to preserve the image quality of the Viltrox 75mm f/1.2, we carefully controlled contrast—ensuring highlights on white lace didn't blow out and shadow textures on the black skirt were retained. While cool venue ceiling lights initially made skin tones look slightly gray, white balance calibration and subtle color adjustments yielded a clean, cool-toned premium feel, perfectly matching Formidable's visual persona. Between venue lighting and bokeh, the final visual effect was highly satisfying. Checking photos back at the hotel and seeing those focused yet playful moments captured on camera made this event shoot plan feel like a complete success.
